Brighthand reports that Microsoft is beta testing a program Voice Command that provides voice control for Pocket PCs and Smartphones. I can see where this may be useful for Pocket PC Phone Editions and Smartphones, but I am not sure about regular Pocket PCs.

CRM News: Corporate Data in Hand This article provides a good overview about why one would want to use Java, or rather J2ME, to develop apps for handhelds, and the pitfalls associated with doing so. IMHO the delay between when hardware features become availble, and when Java supports those features is a problem. Those very features are what distinguish between devices, so it's not in the manufacturers best interests to provide them, yet not have been available to be used.

I am pleased to announced that the third edition of How to Do Everything with Your Pocket PC should now be available at your favorite book stores. This afternoon I received my author's copy, and the book looks fantastic! This edition covers Windows Mobile Software 2003 for Pocket PCs, and the connecting to the Internet chapter (chapter 19) has been completely re-vamped to cover the new connection manager, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi software. This weekend I will be updating the book overview on this site.

Geek.com Geek News - 2nd impressions of the CLIÉ UX50 I can't help but see the irony in the fact that now that Microsoft Handheld PCs are all but dead, now you see Palm OS-based handheld PCs getting props. When the Microsoft Handhelds were released they were continually bashed for their form factor. Keyboards with PDAs? Puhleaze! Now we have a non-Microsoft handheld and everyone has forgotten why they didn't like Handheld PCs. Ironic isn't it?

Computer Associates is providing their eTrust Antivirus software for Pocket PCs free for a limited time. As has been noted elsewhere, we have yet to see a virus attack on Pocket PCs. The Inbox and Word applications on Pocket PCs do not have the scripting capabilities that make their desktop counterparts vulernable. Still, since it is for free the CA product may be worth trying out.

Although he declined to provide specifics, Suwanjindar said Motorola could provide a new look to the Pocket PC line, which has been criticized because so many vendors have released products that contain duplicate feature set and form factors.
