I am digging Streamliner. It is a feature nice, light weight, full-featured outliner. It supports expand and collapse all. Moving items is fairly easy, but it doesn't support drag and drop, nor does it support tap and hold. I like the project management features such as check lists and progress bars because project management is one of the main uses for me. However, it doesn't export a way to export checklist items to Tasks, which is one of the cool features of Pocket MindMap. In fact, Pocket MindMap actually synchronizes task items, which allows you to export an item to Tasks from an outline, then check it off as complete in Tasks, and it will be updated in Pocket MindMap. Perhaps that is something Streamliner can provide in the future, and for now it is something I can live without.

I can move outlines from Pocket MindMap to Streamliner. First I export the outline in Pocket MindMap to HTML. Then I sync the file to my desktop and open it with Word XP. From Word XP I save the file as RTF into the synchronized files folder of my Pocket PC. Then I open the RTF file in Streamliner and save it as a Streamliner file. The process worked near flawless except that items with text associated with them in Pocket MindMap ended up in Streamliner as paragraphs, however that is easy to fix by simply promoting the paragraph item.

I can see already that Streamliner could become my main Pocket PC outlining program. What is particularly important is the small file size given that with only 32 MB on my T-Mobile Pocket PC phone, storage space is precious. (I have Pocket MindMap installed on a Storage Card, but it seems that every big Pocket PC program puts some files in the \Windows folder, which takes up internal storage space.)

Traveller (Two Peaks Software) I think that if I did a lot of traveling this program would be another important install on all my Pocket PCs.

pocketnow.com - Review - Kopsis, Inc.'s Streamliner v1.0.3 One of the most important pieces of software that I put on all my Pocket PCs is Pocket MindMap. It has pretty much been the only outliner available for Pocket PCs, though it isn't a true outliner but rather it's a Mind Mapper. For example, it has an outline view that doesn't support expand all or collapse all, which are fundamental features for outliners.

Thus, this PocketNow article is exciting to me because it is a review of another outliner called Streamliner. I'm going to give this program a good try out and see if it can meet my needs. One downside, though, is that it probably won't work with my preferred desktop outlining program, Radio Userland.

Dude, it's a Pocket PC with a Dell logo. Good looking specs, and the design looks pretty nice too. I wonder how much it will cost, and when it will ship.

HP to release two new iPaqs - Tech News - CNET.com Aside from the news about what HP will bring to market for Christmas, this article also tells us that there are 29 licensees for Pocket PC.

Oh, the article also says that Dell announced is intention of selling a handheld, however they still haven't actually come out and said it will be a Pocket PC. My speculation is that Dell is still negotiating with Microsoft, and they might even be negotiating with PalmSource at the same time.

Tech Trends - CNET.com This CNET article reports on two new Pocket PCs in the US market, ViewSonic's (which I wrote about yesterday) and Fujitsu's. Both are slated to be in the market starting November 18. People who have seen the Pocket Loox have had nothing but good things to say, particularly because it has built in Bluetooth, SD and CompactFlash slots, along with 64 MB of RAM and the 400 Mhz X-Scale. Basically, it specs out about the same as the Toshiba E740, but appears to have a sleeker design. If memory serves me right, there will also be a GSM/GPRS add-on available so that one can use this as a phone.

The number of Pocket PC brands seems to be increasing, and I have to wonder whether this is good or bad news. ViewSonic's announcement is great because it will sell at the $299 price point. (Not to mention the rumored Dell unit, which or may not make it to market.) But, can the market support this many brands? And why does it seem that so many companies are jumping on the Pocket PC band wagon?

I think that Find may be the least used feature on Pocket PCs. I know that I rarely use it, instead I just head to the application that I know contains the information that I am looking for, and just manually look. This occurred to me when I decided to check for the email in my previous post. I could have tapped Start, Find and wrote the name of the item I was looking for, and have my Pocket PC get it for me. Why didn't I?

PCWorld.com - T-Mobile Sidekick Debuts There is a bit more clarity about T-Mobile's service plan for the Sidekick. The unlimited data offer at $39.99 per month is for one year, then it goes to 15 MB per month. IMHO T-Mobile ought to change their $39.99 service for Pocket PC phone edition to meet the 15 MB per month offer.

ViewSonic joins Pocket PC ranks - Tech News - CNET.com Another hardware company is joining the ranks of those selling Pocket PCs. This is an intriguing device in that it is slated to cost $299, has a 300 Mhz X-Scale processor, and a transflective screen. That's the same type of screen as the iPAQ 3900, and I think ViewSonic is the first company besides HP to bring it to market. But, this guy only has 32 MB of RAM and only a Secure Digital slot. I could live with only Secure Digital, but only 32 MB of RAM?

On the gripping hand... it's interesting to see companies that are known for selling personal computer components (ASUS is known for motherboards, and they are bringing the Zayo) getting in to the Pocket PC market. I wonder what that means.

Two final thoughts. As new competitors join the market, and Toshiba keeps cranking out new models, one has to wonder what HP is up to. Word is they will bring several different models to market, probably for the Christmas season. One of those models is suppose to have a low-price.

Second thought. Probably by second half 03 all Pocket PCs will have X-Scale processors. Pressure has to be put on Microsoft and Intel to get performance to levels befitting a 400 MHz processors.
