Mindsurf discource is a networking & software package that support interactive class room instruction. The hardware consists of Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs, Cisco WLAN cards, and Targus Stowaway keyboards. There is a nice video linked off the home page that shows how the package is used by a middle school English teacher.

The Wav Place, Index Page, Sound Effects, Instrument Clips If you are looking for cool ring tones for your XDA, you may find something that you want on this site. I think you can also use MP3 files for ring tones.

CabInstl looks like a useful program for restoring Pocket PCs while away from a desktop. The program enables you to use CAB files to install PPC programs into a specified folder, rather than the default created by the standard installer.

Palmtops in the Operating Room Here is a great article that talks about how handhelds, including Pocket PCs, are being used by hospitals. Here is a great quote:

Dr. Burke's electronic system in Miami has produced an unexpected side effect. With a small camera attachment, the doctors and nurses can use their hand-helds to take digital photographs of their charges. The images have restored a little of the humanity that the factory-inspired paper records diminished. Now during the medical staff's weekly meetings, the patients are no longer just charts and words.

802.11b/Wi-Fi News: News for 8/20/2002 Glenn Fleishman has done some good analysis of the whole Starbucks, T-mobile, HP announcement. One thing that Glenn didn't say anything about. With T-mobile looking to dump Voicestream, will they stick with their wireless broadband service?

WCM - wireless connection manager Ok, I've found the HP software. Of course, I don't have the WL110 card, so I thought I would try installing it on my E740. That didn't work. Apparently the software is looking for the WL110 card. It loads for a brief period of time, doesn't find the card (and it ignores the E740's radio) and then shuts down. I guess I am not tremendously surprised by this.

Now I wonder... I have a Linksys WLAN PC Card that might work with the WL110 drivers. I wonder if that will work. I just might give it a try.

News: Starbucks pours a cup of wireless Bah! This article confirms that the Detroit area is not included in the roll out of Starbuck's wireless service by the end of the year. But the article does say that HP is providing free Pocket PC software to discover networks. I'm trying to track that down.

ZDNet: Tech Update: Networking / The hidden gotcha of built-in WiFi I've written a few times that security is the biggest problem with WiFI and not speed. Unfortunately, the industry hasn't listened to me, and they seem to be obsessed with speed. This article points out the reason for my concern. One of the very good things about WiFI is that it is a standard that everyone complies with. Because of that standard and its certification process we are assured that different manufacturer's WiFI equipment will work with each other. Now we have security being an issue and the hardware manufacturers like Cisco are not waiting for the IEEE, instead they are coming up with their own proprietary security solutions. While that makes things more secure, it also destroys interoperability. All that is good with WiFI may be lost. The IEEE security work groups need to be locked up in a room and not allowed out until they can come back with a spec.

Starbucks, T-Mobile, and HP have made their announcement regarding wireless Internet service in Starbucks stores. I haven't found any information about when Michigan stores will provide access. though this article says they plan to have 2000 stores set up by the end of this year. Perhaps the best nuggest of information is that T-mobile is providing 24 hours of connectivity free to try the service.

I am not entirely sure what this means. It reads like deja vu, but I guess it means that Starbucks is announcing when they will role out 802.11b access to the rest of their stores that don't have it.

If DT sells Voicestream to Cingular, what does that mean for T-mobile broadband?

Report: VoiceStream proposes merger with Cingular - Computerworld The rumors surrounding the sale of Voicestream to either AT&T Wireless or Cingular gets louder with this reference to a Wall Street Journal article. I don't know how to personally feel about this news. At one time I got my mobile service from Ameritech, which is now part of Cingular. In fact, I gave my old account to my wife when I decided to sign up with Omnipoint. Omnipoint got aquired by Voicestream at about the time I signed up. Now I could be back with Cingular. What we really need to know is what this will do for consumer prices. I have been of the opinion that Voicestream's prices and minute packages have been much more appealing than Cingular's. No doubt those will change if Cingular aquires Voicestream.

On a related topic. My service with Voicestream has been pretty spotty the last couple of weeks. Of several occasions I have received network busy messages when trying to place a call, and I have been having regular DNS problems associated with Voicestream's proxy servers. I think these problems are local to the Detroit area. If any of my readers are in the Detroit area and using Voicestream I would appreciate hearing whether your experiences are the same.

Overall I have been hearing that Voicestream has been having network problems ever since the Pocket PC Phone Edition announcement. That suggests a lot of people are checking out PPC Phone Edition, or it suggests that Voicestream's network is very small.
