allNetDevices: - Bluetooth-based PIM-ing for Palm I find it somewhat ironic that Palm might well be saving Bluetooth. At least there are some really cool applications for Bluetooth being done for Palm handhelds, and I got to wonder where Pocket PCs are in all this. This is an area where Palm could actually be leading innovation and Microsoft and their OEMs better be paying attention!

Pocket PC Thoughts :: View topic - First Loox performance benchmark results The discussion here suggests that changes can be made to software to gain performance improvements to the E740. That is apparently supported by Intel in the previous post.

Microsoft High Encryption Pack for Pocket PC v1.0 Word on the Pocket PC news group is that Toshiba did not include the Microsoft High Encryption Pack in the E740's ROM. That means that until you download and install this pack you will not be able to access sites using 128-bit SSL.

Software & Drivers - Download iPAQ H3870 and H3875 Pocket PC ROM Update Compaq has released the new ROM, only a couple of days later from their third date change. You may want to quickly download this, and then wait to see how people fair with the upgrade. The last times we have been down this road Compaq quickly pulled the ROM update due to problems that people had.

Toshiba focuses on mobile computing Infoworld has a good interview with Oscar Koenders, Toshiba's vice president of Worldwide Product Planning. The interview has this item related to Pocket PCs:InfoWorld: Where do handheld devices factor in?
Koenders: Our intent is that anything which is priced today around $399 is going to be a Pocket PC device rather than a Palm. The first part of our Pocket PC strategy is make Pocket PC available to a much larger customer group, and therefore give that customer group access to more applications than they are used to now in their PDA. And we're going to take the PDAs and integrate much more technology than what is currently available. For example, in the future we will integrate wireless into the same form factor.
I like Toshiba's Pocket PC strategy. A step would be to get the price of the E740 down to $399.

I went to CompUSA this evening to check out the Toshiba E740, and possibly buy one. I was impressed enough to decide to buy one, but the Novi store was out. Funny, I was watching availability last week and it showed they were in stock. I did get a little play time with one at the store, and it seemed to me that basic Pocket PC operations seemed as good, if not better than my iPAQ 3870. MS Reader definitely loaded the fastest I had ever seen it load. My one observation is that it seems there is a lot of wasted space around the screen that could be used for a larger screen. After I left the Novi, MI CompUSA I headed to the Novi, MI Best Buy, and it also did not have any in stock, though they did have a display unit. The guy at the store implied that they have yet to get any in stock, so it seems all they have ever had is the display unit.

Gary Krakow thinks the iPAQ 3970 will be a hit, and he raves about the screen. I think that no matter how good the screen is, it won't sell in huge quantities at $749.

XScale: Hit or Hype? Jeff Kirvin has written a very good article covering the issues with the X-Scale processors included in the newest Pocket PCs released in the last two weeks. Personally, I think it is a very tough call on the Toshiba E740. On the one hand are the benefits of built-in WiFI plus two storage slots, but on the other hand is the slower processor. I agree with Jeff that if battery life is noticably better (and from reports I've seen so far it is nothing to brag about) that would push things over the edge towards the E740. All in all this is a real head scratcher, and about the only real positive I can see is that perhaps prices of existing Pocket PCs will come down. (Though note from my previous entry it appears HP is pricing the H3900 series to keep the H3800 prices right where they are today.)

HP Press Release: Hewlett-Packard Unveils iPAQ Pocket PC H3900 Series with Stunning New Color Screen and Expanded Versatility Holy exploding wallet Batman, HP has officially lauched the H3900 series Pocket PCs, and catch those prices... $749 for the H3970 for which the only new features are 16 MB more ROM, a newer screen display, and a 400 Mhz chip that provides questionable performance gains. I think you can see here HP's influence on pricing, which is consistent with the ridiculous prices they have been charging for their handheld PCs for years. The HP3950 series, which does not have Bluetooth, and for whcih the only difference is the screen and processor is $649.
