Happy Birthday Pocket PC! On April 19, 2000 the Pocket PC was officially launched at Grand Central station in New York. That will always be a significant moment for me, because three days earlier I finished writing my first book. Without the Pocket PC, that book would have never been written.

allNetDevices: - Card Connects Pocket PCs to Next-Gen Net I can't believe all the Pocket PC news coming out this week. Is it an anniversary thing? (You do know that tomorrow is the second anniversary of the Pocket PC, right?) About a month ago Sierra Wireless and Verizon announced the Aircard 555, which is a PC Card that supports voice and Verizon's new 1XRTT 2.5G network. Now the folks at Socket have announced their high-speed digital phone card. While this is a CompactFlash card, it provides a cable connection to high-speed data-enabled mobile phones, just like the regular digital phone cards. That's a disappointment. What we want is the same thing as the Aircard 555 in the CompactFlash size.

infoSync : Toshiba's new Pocket PCs revealed? infoSync reported back in February on the Toshiba E310 and E740. Yesterday we heard official word on the E310, but so far nothing about the E740. infoSync reports that Toshiba confirms that the E740 is a real product to be announced later this year. So perhaps the e550G will not make it to US markets.

Dale Coffing reports that Pocket PC geek extrodinaire phillip torrone is at it again, showing how GPS, Pocket PCs, and Macromedia Flash can be combined to provide location-based services such as playing movie trailers. I think there some interesting potential applications of location-based services so long as they allow the user to opt-in and simply retrieve information. In other words, I want to know what is around me, but I don't want anyone else to know where I am.

Pocket PC Thoughts :: View topic - Yet Another New Toshiba Toshiba appears to be on a roll, with yet another Pocket PC announcement, though we don't know when or if this one will make it to US markets. Check out the picture though, because it has a 4" screen and the buttons and front panel make it look a little Clie-ish.

Synchronicity: This morning I gave a presentation that included information about Bluetooth. Laster in the day, at WinHEC, Bill Gates announced that Microsoft will starting selling a Bluetooth receiver, and Bluetooth-enabled keyboards and mice.
I have 3Com's Bluetooth USB adapter that I have been using with my Compaq iPAQ 3870, which is nice but not as smooth as I would like because I have to initiate synchronization.

Pocket PC Thoughts :: View topic - Toshiba e310 There is a picture here of the e310. According to Marlof this is targeted at a consumer market. Check out translated link to pocketpcitalia.com, which shows a lot of pictures. This thing looks very thin, but it only has a secure digital slot, and there is no mention of any other expansion capabilities. Without the ability to use CompactFlash and the limitation to 32 MB of RAM I personally think this device is priced $100 too high. With luck the price will drop down to that level after a brief period of time.
But I commend Toshiba for coming out with a new Pocket PC that has a lower price, which is a welcomed new trend of new, more expensive devices.

Microsoft expo to unveil new devices - Tech News - CNET.com "Toshiba's device, the Pocket PC e310, will begin shipping April 22 for $399 and will come with 32MB of memory, a Secure Digital expansion slot and will use Intel's 206MHz StrongARM processor. The e310 will weigh about 5 ounces and measure about a half an inch thick."
Good price, but a 32 MB device? I think what we want to hear is that they have improved battery life.
HP also announced the new Jornada 728 Handheld PC, which I guess means that the Handheld PC is not completely dead. It runs Handheld PC 2000, has 64 MB of RAM and costs a whopping $999! Yah, right, whatever. But, HP must be selling these things since they continue to set these high prices for their handhelds.

Hopefully this has better battery life than the e570.

My iPAQ 3870 has been much more stable since it's hard reset and subsequent installation of the latest patches from Compaq. Harald has pretty much become my main Pocket PC, which I use to check email throughout the day using the Sierra Wireless Aircard 300. I do have one annoyance with the 3870 and the Aircard. The iPAQ gets to a point where it loses track of the Aircard drivers. On occasion I try to connect to the CDPD network and the Watcher program claims that it can't find the Aircard even though it is sitting right there in the slot. Some times I can simply pop out the card and plug it back in, but more often than not I have to do a soft reset.

There should be a way to put Pocket PCs into stasis. With multiple Pocket PCs, it is hard to keep track of which ones to keep charged. In the process my Toshiba e570 ran down to a hard reset.

Ernie the Attorney posts about going to the Tech Ed party with Scoble. Boy, it has been a long time since I've been to Tech Ed. The two that I did attend were in New Orleans, and I had a great time. My guess is that Tech Ed had a lot of Pocket PCs around, even at a Blues Traveller concert.
