I am developing a directory of web sites that have information about Using Handheld Computers in various settings. Right now the directory has links to articles about handhelds being used in libraries, in schools, and in medicine. The directory will grow over time.

Emminence Middle School in Henry County, Kentucky uses Windows CE and Pocket PC devices in a paperless classroom. This is an example of one teacher being creative, and in the process bringing technology to the classroom. And what should be even more notable is that this is not your upper-class up-scale school in the suburbs, but a small school in a rural town.

Jim McCarthy is writing a series of articles about moving from Palm OS handhelds to Pocket PCs. The foundational article, Your New Pocket PC Is Not Your Palm, is available now, and successive articles will be available each Friday. Jim is uniquely qualified for writing these articles since he has been a Palm OS user for several years, and recently started writing about Pocket PCs. I wish I had thought of something like this for my book.

The Gadgeteer made it to the esteemed online pages of the Wall Street Journal. Not everyone gets a chance to have one of those cool WSJ pencil drawing pictures made of them. It's actually a good article on the marketing efforts of handheld computing companies, which IMHO is simply utilizing the product evangelizing that Guy Kawaski employed successfully at Apple.

Today the 3Com Bluetooth USB adapter arrived via FedEx, and I have been having fun installing it on Barney and then setting up a Bluetooth connection between Barney and Harald, the Compaq iPAQ 3870. It all went rather smoothly, thanks in part to Compaq releasing a patch that specifically addresses the 3Com adapters. I bought the adapter from eCost for around $100 several weeks ago, and apparently since I received mine it is no longer backordered.
The main things that you can do with this configuration is synchronize wirelessly, transfer files from a desktop PC to the iPAQ, and exchange business cards. I also tried using ActiveSync passthru to browse web pages, and was successfully able to browse some sites, but not all. There are probably more things that I can do, which I will discover as I play more with this set up. The lone thing that is making is from being perfect is that you have to initiate synchronization in order for it to happen. Hopefully somewhere down the road Microsoft will come out with a version of ActiveSync that can autodiscover a Bluetooth connection once in range and automatically sync.

IBM Microdrive Promotion - $99.95: Digital Photography Review I think it is funny how they have to emphasize that this is not an April fools joke. Is it? Well, $99 for the 340 MB microdrive sounds like a good deal, though if memory serves me right, the 340 MB drive did chew threw battery power quicker than the 1 GB drive does.
