This is very smart. Palm has signed a marketing dial with Sony-Ericsson to bundle Palm's Bluetooth SecureDigital card with the T68i, which will be sold by Cingular Wireless.

More news from Voicestream. They signed a deal with Nokia to use Nokia's EDGE-capable Ultrasite base stations. This is a stepping stone for moving Voicestream's 2.5 GPRS network, known as iStream, to a 3G network. Today iStream provides data rates of 40 kbps, EDGE will provide speeds up to 473 kbps. Another interesting tidbit from the article is that Voicestream will be selling PC cards that have integrated 802.11b and GPRS radios starting the second half of 2002. I suspect these are the integrated cards that Nokia announced last year. There is definitely a lot of things happening in wireless, but the question is, is anyone buying it? Right now I think the prices are too high to obtain any significant market share.

Pocket PC Thoughts - Compaq delivers BlueTooth SoftPaq Does this mean that the 3870 will now sync with a PC that has 3Com's USB Bluetooth adapter connected? There is no news on Brighthand, though there are a few posts there suggesting that Compaq has already pulled the softpaq.

Enterprise News -- GoAmerica Wins WAN/LAN Integration Race GoAmerica plans to offer WLAN service in 1500 US locations starting in the 2nd half of this year. This is part of a partnership with Boingo and hereUare Communications. I really wonder whether GoAmerica can pull something like this off. I subscribe to their CDPD service, and I have been often frustrated by the lack of technical expertise in their helpdesk. What we don't know, and what is not provided in the press release is the exact location of 1500 hot spots.
These announcements regarding WiFI access does have me a bit concerned about using the Pocket PC Phone Edition, particularly the mm02 xda, which only has a SecureDigital slot. Without a CompactFlash card I will not be able to access a wireless LAN using the device unless we get a 80211b network card in the SecureDigital form.

Last week the hot place to be was Germany and CeBIT. This week the action moves to Orlando, Florida and the CTIA show. I have already written about several of the Pocket PC-related announcements out of CTIA. One way to follow the CTIA news is to read the following weblogs:

Dane Carlson links to a PDF from Wired that lists public wireless LAN access points in the United States. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get this in to a searchable format on Pocket PCs. I wonder what Starbuck's rollout plans are for this year?

VoiceStream - products & services Here are the goods! Voicestream will be selling mm02's xda! I personally think this is the best looking of the Pocket PC Phone Edition devices. Dale had one with him at Chicago Comdex, and it is nice and small, making it closer to a phone. The one downside is that it only as a SecureDigital slot, and I don't know if it will be expandable.
The remaining questions are, when will it be available, and for how much?

PCWorld.com - Microsoft Smart Phones Coming Soon This article provides the news of who is the US carrier to sell the Sendo Z100.. it's Cingular Wireless. Bah! It seems that Voicestream is doing absolutely nothing here! Verizon is starting to look more appealing to me, but I don't like the idea of having to change phone numbers.

The CTIA show is this week, and we already have news that Pocket PC Phone Edition will be available starting in June from Verizon. Verizon, Sprint, and Voicestream will all be selling the Audiovox Thera, which from the pictures looks exactly like the Toshiba e570 and Audiovox Maestro except that it has an antenna, an extra LED, and two extra buttons. The two extra buttons appear to be just slapped on where there is available space, and aren't particularly ergonomically pleasing. Oh, and the article states that the device will cost $800, though one would hope that will be subsidized with service from the mobile providers. On first look I don't find this device to be particularly appealing.
