pocketnow.com Discussion - 3835 SD/MMC issues playing WMA or MP3 In many ways change is good. What would have been a good change is improved quality for the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs. Alas, it is beginning to appear to me that is not the case. Right now I am listening to music that I copied to a Sandisk 64 MB SD card in my 3870, and I am experiencing music skipping, just as described in this thread.

In general I think there is something not right about the SD/MMC slot driver for the iPAQ. I have also be experiencing problems with GoAmerica's software that I installed on the card. The problem is that I have been having the iPAQ lock up on me when I start the iPAQ up. This is not good because of the main reasons why I bought the 3870 is to run my Internet software like GoAmerica from the SD card.

I suspect there is some type of timing problem going on here. I wonder how it is going to take before Compaq fixes this problem.

Brighthand -- nothing but handhelds Brighthand has a report about a prototype Sony Clie with an integrated keyboard. Call me a bit old fashioned, but I am of the opion that a PDA is a pen-based device. I personally don't see the value in using these small keyboards over a stylus. If I want to do touch typing I can use the Stowaway keyboard, or a Handheld PC.

The RIM keyboard works because in my mind it is really targeted for short messages and email. I have used one and it works very well in the small pager form. But I would not be satisified with using RIM for my full-time PDA because I want a larger screen, and I want to be able to interact directly on that screen.

PCWorld.com - Palm Puts More Choices in Your Handheld Where have I seen this before?

The Nando Times: When it comes to color hand-helds, Palm pales in comparison Karen Kaplan of the Los Angeles Times takes a critical look at color used on Palm handhelds. I think that if you took a survey of people who choose Pocket PCs over Palm handhelds one of the top reasons why is because the Pocket PC's have color screens.

In general I think the purchasing decisions between Pocket PC and Palm fall along the following lines. People who are very discriminating in their purchase decision, and who want the most features, and in some ways the most bang for their buck, buy Pocket PCs. People who are looking for the cheapest PDA available pick Palm. In just about every time that I have talked with a person who bought a Palm handheld the reason why they chose a Palm over Pocket PC is because or price.

This presents an interesting dilema for Palm. While price is one of the top reasons why people buy their devices, selling low-cost PDAs is not very profitable. They may have 60 percent of the market, but how much money are they making from that market share? On the other hand, Palms efforts to sell more expensive and profitable devices have not been successful. Higher priced Palm handhelds are compared against Pocket PCs, and with the price being about equal, the customer choose a Pocket PC because it has more features.

infoSync : SDIO standard ratified So far the only thing you can do with Secure Digital slots is add storage space. However, the ratification of the SDIO standard paves the way for the development of Secure Digital peripherals.

GoAmerica has released a Pocket PC 2002 version of their Go.Web software. I ended up installing this on my iPAQ because I had an email that I was trying to send via GoAmerica using Inbox that bounced back with an "Invalid message recipients" message. I was able to send a message using GoAmerica's Go.Mail client. Just now I was able to send a message using Inbox, so it might just be that GoAmerica's SMTP server is acting up.

I think I prefer using Inbox over Go.Mail, but I will use it if that is what I need to do to send and receive email. Go.Web has some interesting features, including a back button that works like the back button in the desktop verison of Internet Explorer. But, Go.Web has the problem that Pocket PC 2000's Internet Explorer had where back returns you to the top of a page and not to directly to the hyperlink that you tapped.

I've been playing with Pocket Mindmap running on my iPAQ 3870, and so far I am really liking it. It is not exactly designed to be an outlining tool, but it has an outline view, and so far it to me it is the best outliner that I have used on a Pocket PC. One problem is that for some reason the iPAQ seems to slow down.

With the help of fellow MVP Ed Hansberry, I have figured out how to get rid of the "ignore_my_docs" file in the iPAQ File Store, which I wrote about last week. The problem was that I could not delete the file no matter what I did. Since the file was there, all the files and subfolders in the iPAQ File Store appear along with all My Documents files and folders in the file list views of Pocket Word and Excel. To delete the file from the iPAQ File Store I had to create a My Documents folder.

So here is what appears to be happening. When you save a Pocket Word or Excel file to a storage card and do not put it in a My Documents folder, these programs write a hidden, zero byte file in the Storage Card folder named ignore_my_docs. That file acts as a flag to these applications, causing them to treat the Storage Card folder as a My Documents folder. I'll probably write all this up into a How To.

Software & Drivers - Download iPAQ H3600 Series Pocket PC ROM Update Compaq is releasing a new ROM upgrade for their Pocket PC 2000 devices. This upgrade is only for models H3630, H3635, H3640, H3650, H3660, H3670. It is nice to see that Compaq has not completely abandoned those who bought the first iPAQs.
