Todd Ogasawara has upgraded his @migo PD 600-C to Pocket PC 2002, and writes about it on his site. One big difference with the @migo upgrade is that it is done entirely from a CompactFlash card rather than via an ActiveSync connection. The thinking here would be to avoid the ActiveSync communications, which has probably caused a lot of upgrade problems with the iPAQ.

PCWorld.com - Microsoft Adds Telephony to Pocket PC "The Wireless Pocket PC has all the applications of a standard Pocket PC PDA, but adds hardware to connect to cellular networks and software to dial numbers and send text messages. Microsoft is also building ties to applications like Pocket Outlook, so users can tap on a contact name and automatically dial the associated number. Right-clicking on a contact presents a menu of choices, such as sending a text message." I don't think this is really new news. The mmO2 was demoed at the Pocket PC 2002 launch with these features. I also have a chapter in the the 2nd Edition of my book that will cover these phone features. The key thing here for users is that the "Wireless Pocket PC" is a different platform than Pocket PC 2002. It will only be available on new hardware, not existing hardware.

I picked up another cool piece of information from Pocket PC Thoughts. The Internet radio showOnline Tonight with David Lawrence has started to feature a 1 hour weekly segment on Pocket PCs, at 10 PM EST Tuesday nights. A recording of the show is made available from the Online Tonight web site until the next show, so you have a week to listen in if you can't catch the live broadcast.

Apparently Ken Belanger claims that he owns the copyright and trademark for Pocket PC and has filed a lawsuit. There is a quote in this USA Today article (scroll down to the bottom) from an attorney wo doesn't think he as a strong case. (The question is whether Belanger actually registered his trademark and copyrights. Only registered copyrights give you the power to sue.)

About 15 percent to 20 percent of the world's telephone networks use CDMA technology." Also in the article is word that the official name for Stinger is SmartPhone 2002. Dale is doing a good job of getting us fired up for CES. "Just wait till you hear about some of the new and exciting products that are to be announced for the Pocket PC," says Dale. One of the items Dale will get a closer look at is the FlyCam, which is a camera attachment for Animation Technology's FlyJacket. The FlyJacket is a Compaq iPAQ expansion pack that provides multimedia features. Tekguru has pictures of the FlyCam on it's home page.

Another piece of information on the Tekguru home page is an announcement of Pocket Tracker, which is Tekguru's first step into Pocket PC development. "After trying to find an application to show my appointments coming up and important tasks, and the ability to track my expences for each appointment, I could find nothing so I wrote one." While you are there, you might as well grab the Pocket PC FAQ Database.
