SyncData SyncExpress Today is a day for answering commonly asked questions. Another common question I get is, "Can I sync my Pocket PC with Outlook Express?" The answer is usually no, but that answer now changes to Yes! Check out this product if you want to sync with Outlook Express.

That sucked! Sorry for the outage. Apparently when I published the first entry this morning the FTP transfer failed leaving a blank page here. That's the first time Blogger did that to me.

Geek.com Geek News - PocketMac release details $69.96 for all of the capabilities that ActiveSync provides seems a bit high, but then if you own a Macintosh and want to sync with a Pocket PC, you don't have a choice. I expect to see some push back over this.

I've continue working with hp safestore on my HP Jornada 565 to determine the best way to use that extra 8 MB of ROM. I have left all the applications there that HP installed except Codewallet Pro, which I removed because I use Ilium Software's eWallet. I have also installed DeveloperOne's OutALine and Snoopsoft's Dashboard to the savestore. While I have installed Dashboard I am finding that I am not using it. I guess the main reason why I was using Dashboard on my Pocket PCs was for the skins, and I am finding Pocket PC 2002's themes to be good enough. Consequently I will probably remove Dashboard. Yet, the one feature I do miss is the application launcher so I need to check out some of the other Today screen launchers that are available.

I have been trying out a number of PPC 2002 themes, which can start chewing up a few amount of space. You can install themes to the My Documents folder or the Windows folder. You can put themes on storage cards, but that means you need to always have the card in the Pocket PC. Putting themes in the internal My Documents folder means they will be synchronized with the desktop. A lot of files synchronizing can be a pain. Putting themes in the Windows folder adds to an already full and cluttered folder. So, I have been putting the themes I have been trying in a My Documents folder in hp safestore.

I used File Explorer on the Pocket PC to move all the theme files to safestore. One of the cool improvements in File Explorer are three buttons on the command bar that switch between local storage, storage cards, and network stores. That makes copying files from the Pocket PC and the device a little simpler by only having to tap a button to switch between the two, rather than having to use the drop-down at the top of the screen to browse through folders. This is but one of example of the many small things done in Pocket PC 2002 to make for a better user experience, and for me makes the PPC 2002 upgrade worthwhile.

I had installed Pocket Informant to the safestore but found that there was a problem doing that with launching the Pocket Informant applications using hardware buttons. I haven't got around to reinstall Pocket Informant to RAM.

One of the recommended ways to secure wireless LANs is to use virtual private networking (VPN). Certicom has released a version of movianVPN designed specifically to work with Pocket PCs and 802.11b. movianVPN supports IPSec while the built-in VPN support with Pocket PC 2002 only supports PPTP. The combination of these two items pretty much provides completely coverage of VPN solutions for Pocket PCs.

If been doing some more research in to the VoiceStream iStream service which is GPRS. They are specifically selling a version of this service that connects to Compaq iPAQs and includes Pocket PC software. The "base" PDA service is $19 per month for 5 MB of data, and you pay $5 for each additional MB. Those prices are simply too high.

I was browsing through PocketNow's skin library, and I had to laugh when I saw this NewtonInc skin. This skin has two subtle messages that only long time Newton users will know. I am curious to know if any of my readers can catch them?

iPaq to feature wireless server software - Tech News - CNET.com Compaq will be bundling Extended System's XTND Connect client on certain iPAQs. In my experience with this product, there is nothing special about it that implements wireless. The server simply sits on the corporate network and mediates communication between clients and Exchange servers. The clients can access that server using a wired or wireless connection, which have to be made outside the the Extended Systems product. I quickly stopped using the XNTD Connect client wih my Pocket PCs when I discovered that it simply can not co-exist with ActiveSync. XNTD Connect alters the built in Pocket Outlook databases in such a way that causes ActiveSync to duplicate data. You definitely do not want to run ActiveSync and XTND Connect on the same PC, and I have found that if you are running XTND Connect to sync at work, and try to use ActiveSync at home, the data still gets messed up. In short, XTND Connect wants to be a complete replacement of ActiveSync.
