With the new Pocket PCs just around the corner, there may be more Palm users switching to Pocket PC who want to move all their data. SyncTalk is one solution.

It would appear that some retail stores have decided to start selling the new HP Pocket PCs before the official launch day of October 4. It was my understanding earlier this month that HP was already shipping these devices, so I am not surprised that this has happened. Most retail outfits want to get new products on the shelves ASAP to beat the competition.

Pocket PC Thoughts reports a new PC remote control program that has Pocket PC and Palm clients. If you don't like VNC Viewer and you don't have a Windows Terminal Server, this may be the way to go. The price is $50, which is a bit steep for Pocket PC software, but may be worth it for the functionality.

iPAQ Pocket PC 2002 - Pocket PC Thoughts Ok everyone else is linking to these pics of the new Compaq iPAQ, I guess I will too. I am not sure that I am entirely sold on the new look. I do like the addition of a secure digital slot, and the addition of Bluetooth is intriguing. If we ever see other Bluetooth devices out there then that will be a nice development. It is certainly a differentiator.

So let's sum up:

The jury is still out on NEC and Casio.

Gartner: "But Handspring's biggest problem is Microsoft. The broader Palm operating system--to which Handspring has hitched its star--is waning as the operating system of choice among corporations. Gaining popularity is Microsoft's Pocket PC."

Apparently Merill Lynch is expanding their wireless access to cover Pocket PCs. The page that I am linking here doesn't directly mention Pocket PCs, but if you follow the link to the download page you will be able to download a version of the app for iPAQs and Jornadas. I have tried it out on my @migo and can't figure out how it is supposed to work.

allNetDevices: - App Turns Pocket PC Into Phone Book If you can beam one phone number from a Pocket PC to a mobile phone, why wouldn't you just beam all of your contacts?

Harmony 802.11b CompactFlash Card More confirmation that this is in fact an 802.11b card. Jason says it looks the same as his DLink card, so it may be made by the same manufacturer.

Yahoo - Microsoft Reader Marks New Era for eBook Tools and Creation Technologies Microsoft is releasing two new tools for developing Reader eBooks. One of these tools helps you make dictionaries and other reference materials. The other tool is an updated Word converter. The converter adds a button to the toolbar in Word 2000 and 2002. Both of these tools will be released with Reader 2.0, which is scheduled to be released in early October. I just checked, and there is no way to determine what version of Reader is installed on my Merlinized iPAQ. My guess is Reader 2.

Pocket PC for Palm Users Jeff Kirvin's on again, off again love affair with Pocket PC is on again. Pocket Word is not as good as Wordsmith, but the other Pocket PC 2002 features seem to make up for deficiency as far as Jeff is concerned. At least for now. Jeff as written a nice article matching the current Palm OS apps he uses with Pocket PC equivalents.

I've just tested the Acrobat reader on an @migo and it works pretty much as advertised. There are two different types of Acrobat files: tagged and untagged. Tagged files will work better with Pocket PCs because it allows the reader to automatically adjust the text to fit the size of the screen. Most PDF files are untagged, and the converter attempts to add tagging, but so far I have seen little results from that process. The untagged PDF files can be opened but can result in a lot scrolling right and left to read the document.

Pocket PC Thoughts reports that Adobe has released the beta for a Pocket PC Acrobat Reader. I see this as yet another sign of how far Pocket PCs and Windows CE has come. We've been asking for an Acrobat Reader for Windows CE devices for five years.
