Metricom plans to shutter Ricochet - Tech News - CNET.com Disappointing news. Metricom has been a pioneer of wireless data service, starting with a 28.8 wireless service in the San Francisco area in the late 80s. They just brought up their 128K service in several metropolitan areas, including Detroit, at the beginning of this year. There is still hope that the service could return under different ownership, but if that happens the price must be lower than the $75 Metricom was charging.

Tonight I installed Pocket Streets 2002. I've confirmed that the push pin problem is fixed. I can also confirm that Pocket Streets 2002 is not able to read Pocket Streets 2001 files. However, PS 2002 now accepts a city, state and zip code in Find Address. I also tried MapHelp and that doesn't work with Pocket Streets 2002. It loads the map file I select but doesn't go beyond that. Hopefully Tapani will get his hands on PS 2002 and be able to work out the kinks.

allNetDevices: - Analysts: Pocket PC to Pass Palm It looks like a few analysts got their calculators out and did some simple math. They conclude that at the current rate, by 2005 Pocket PCs will over take Palm in market share. I guess that would be assuming everything stands still. According to the Aberdeen Group the reason why Pocket PCs will come out on top is enterprise sales.

If you have read any of my reviews or comments regarding Pocket PC GPS software, you will know that one of my gripes is the lack of integration with Contacts. What I want is to be able to go to Contacts, tap and hold on a contact name, and have options in the pop-up menu like, route to address, for find address.
Tapani Otala is working on a program called MapHelp that provides the functionality that I am looking for, except right now it only works with Pocket Streets. Basically, it is the same level of integration that you get when you install Streets & Trips on a desktop that has Outlook. To look up a contact on a map you tap-and-hold and then tap Map It in the pop-up menu. MapHelp grabs the address info from the contact, fires up Pocket Streets and does a find on that address. Provided that the address is in the map file that you select, you will shortly see the location of the contact.
Tapani is also working on providing integration with online maps such as MapQuest, but that is currently not available the beta version of the program. Later on tonight I will try MapHelp with Pocket Streets 2002. Since it doesn't seem to read the map file directly, I am hopeful that the program will work just fine.
And best of all, in any future reviews about GPS software I can point to MapHelp as what I think Pocket PC GPS software should provide.

allNetDevices: - Handheld Horse Race Heats Up "Compaq has done several things extremely well. First, it has masterfully sold iPAQ directly into the enterprise. Second, unlike Palm and Handspring, which botched some business basics such as inventory management and product rollouts in the last couple of quarters, Compaq executed its marketing and channel strategies crisply." Really? Why am I not surprised given the source? Obviously Mr. Haskin hasn't spent much time trying to actually buy an iPAQ. And then there is the quality issues. My point is, if Mr. Haskin can be so far off on his assessment of Compaq, why should people trust his assessment of anything else?

Pocketnow.com has posted a review of Microsoft Pocket Streets 2002, which is only available with Streets & Trips 2002, AutoRoute 2002, or MapPoint 2002. You can not longer download this program from the web site, and it does not read PS 2001 maps. Nor can you read PS 2002 maps using PS 2001. I just checked Best Buy and they will starting selling Streets & Trips 2002 on Thursday, August 2. Microsoft is in the process of pulling links to the Pocket Streets 2001 download from their web site, but the door is still a bit open. For the time being you will find the download here. Once that link is gone the only way you will be able to get the software is off the ActiveSync 3.1 CD that ships with the original Pocket PCs.

ORiNOCO RG1000 software update I just read about a problem with the Summer 2001 ORiNOCO software release. If you use a hex string to define your WEP key it will not take the string. Orinoco Tech Support knows about the problem and is currently advising to downgrade to the Spring 2001 release. There problem is reported to affect NT and 2000 PCs, but probably affects all Windows operating systems since they use NDIS 4 and 5. I have installed this software yet, but I suspect it will affect Windows CE devices as well.
