derago's dNote supports categories, but it does not synchronize with Outlook. It does synchronize with a desktop application designed to work with dNote, and which I presume supports categories. Unfortunately the trial version of this program does not support synchronization so there is no way for me to test it out.

I'm doing some work with Notes. So far I have found that Notes does not support Outlook categories, nor does there seem to be any other program that does. The closest is Phatware's HPC Notes that supports multiple Outlook folders, but it doesn't support categories either.

PocketNow goes to PC Expo: "My biggest question was: 'Okay, so I have a $500 iPAQ Pocket PC, and you have a $500 m505. Why should I go with your device?' I didn't get a straight answer! Even though I was slightly pestering, they were unable to convince me to reconsider my iPAQ obsession."

Today Andy writes over on Pocket PC Thoughts about the news regarding Compaq's plans for more iPAQ sleeves, and particularly the cell phone sleeve. He feels that a PDA does not make a good cell phone, and I agree. But, I like the idea that I could use it as a cell phone if I wished. What I want is my cell-phone enabled iPAQ and my regular cell phone to use the same account. There might be times when I want to use my iPAQ to send or receive a call, and why shouldn't I be able to do that since I couldn't use both the cell phone and iPAQ at the same time? That requires the cellular service providers to change their systems to allow the same phone number to be used on multiple devices, and I doubt that is going to happen.

Compaq to pump up iPaq add-ons - Tech News - CNET.com "A GPS expansion pack, called Pocket Co-pilot, from the New Zealand company Navman" Dale, is this what you were referring to earlier in the week? What do the Travroute people think about this brand name?

Compaq to pump up iPaq add-ons - Tech News - CNET.com "Compaq itself is working on a Bluetooth expansion pack. The product, planned for release in the third quarter, will include both a Bluetooth radio and a CompactFlash slot for additional memory or to add on other devices. The price of the pack has not been determined." Looks like we are going to have a lot of fun this fall when all the good stuff starts coming to market. That is assuming everyone delivers on their plans.

David Coursey: "WHAT'S HAPPENING at Palm--losses, layoffs, and lethargy--is sad, because the company is within sight of becoming the Microsoft of the mobile world. But this is a chasm across which Yankowski is unlikely to lead Palm. Why? Because Palm hasn't learned the lesson that Bill Gates understood early and Steve Jobs forced on Apple: An operating system company shouldn't compete with its hardware OEMs. Bill never tried, and Steve killed Apple's licensing of MacOS."

Last night I decided to remove the Compaq WL100 driver from my iPAQ since I was suspecting it to be causing problems with synchronization. I was using this driver with the Linksys wireless LAN card, but since I now I have an Orinoco card that has its own driver I don't need the WL100 on this iPAQ. So far since I removed the WL100 driver I have not had a problem with syncing. I can't remember if I had this driver on this iPAQ before the ROM was upgraded to version 1.77 of the iPAQ software. That means I don't know if the problem is with the driver, or the driver and the 1.77 software.

When Steve Jobs came back to Apple to save the company one of the first things he did was kill the licensing agreement that existed between Apple and several other companies that were making Macintosh clones. Why? Because the clones were doing nothing more than eating up Apple's market share, and there wasn't enough money in the licensing deal for Apple to keep them in business. (Jobs also claimed that all these companies were doing was taking advantage of Apple's R&D.) Its easy to compare Palm with Apple and Apple's aborted licensing of their OS came to mind when I read this CNET.com article about the new Sony Clies and their price. I think Palm is experiencing what Apple feared, the only difference being that Palm is a market leader at the time of the licensing, where Apple wasn't. I think there is a good possibility that these Palm "clones" will completely destroy Palm. Will Palm have the guts to do the same thing Apple did? I don't think so.. besides they are dealing with much bigger players than Apple was. Why is this licensing deal bad? Because Palm is a hardware company, not a software company. Always has been, always will be. There is nothing appealing about their software other than how it supports there hardware. In other words, their software enables the hardware. There is no way that Palm can exist as a software company, there isn't enough money in it. The only way Microsoft can do what they are doing is that they are much more diversified... they have the Windows franchise to protect them. And finally, if I were Steve Jobs I would tell everyone in ear shot "I told you so." Everyone was clamoring for Apple to license their software.

So what is the likey scenario? Who knows. But I am thinking that if Sony is serious about the Clie, and they don't want to use another OS or create their own, that they will buy the Palm OS. And were would that leave Handspring? Perhaps Handspring makes a pre-emptive strike and and buys the Palm OS before Sony. And there is a possibility that a larger, more diversified hardware company will aquire Palm. All of this might happen as a hostile take over, unless Palm shareholders push. Spun-off companies tend to not want to be re-aquired by someone else, usually because their chief executives like being kill of the hill.

Chris De Herrera has a good Casio BE-300 Overview. Key things I see here: runs some Palm-size PC apps, but not Pocket PC apps; uses Flash RAM meaning that if your batteries run out you won't lose everything. (Like CompactFlash storage cards work). Has a Type II CF Slot, so will support many storage options and peripherals and I am guessing that with CE being the operating system the drivers will be readily available. It also has a PC Card sleeve that connects via the CF Slot. Chris also has some pictures. One of the pics includes a Targus Stowaway keyboard. I think it's interesting that the BE-300 will support a tone of peripherals, but I wonder whether there will be enough apps to take advantage of them.

Here is the press release about the BE-300.. called the Pocket Manager. It's not a Pocket PC. The key bit of news is that its price is less than $300. There is also an official site for the device. <via Pocket PC Thoughts>

Is the Compaq WL100 driver causing a problem with syncing on my Compaq iPAQ? I don't know. What I do know is that far too often lately I put my iPAQ in the cradle to sync and after a period of time the iPAQ automatically powers off. It seems that the only thing that works right now is to do a soft reset of my iPAQ before putting it in the cradle. That's a bother! I am wondering if there is some WL100 code lurking in there that has a power-off feature going wacky.

BrightHand has gone ahead and run the news of the Casio BE-300 based on published information in an Israeli newspaper.
According to Steve's information this device will use CE 3.0 embedded for the operating system, but use Casio's home brew UI rather than the Pocket PC UI. That would mean that all the PIM applications would be developed and provided by Casio. One would think that this device is targetted at replacing Casio's Pocket Viewer line rather than being a Pocket PC. The reaction to the news at Brighthand has been very negative.

Dale has more rumor on the new Casio, but a 16 MB device doesn't excite me, even if it uses an expansion pack system similar to the iPAQ.
