Palm, Handspring Sink to All-Time Lows It's no great surprise that Palm's stock price got crushed today. It was the most active stock on NASDAQ. The analysts didn't have anything positive to say about Palm's future.

Right now the Jornada 540 has 5.87 MB of storage space occupied and 2.70 space available. The total 16 MB of RAM is split in half between storage and program memory. With Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, Inbox and Internet Explorer all running (not to mention PocketNAV and Dashboard) there is 4.78 MB of program memory in use and 2.53 MB free. Right now I have the following programs loaded:
The items in italics are on the storage card. The trick is to add the remaining applications without decreasing the internal storage space beyond the current 2.70 MB. That will be near impossible because when you install applications on a storage card it seems some files end up in the Windows folder, using internal storage.

My iPAQ Pocket PC is flipping out. That is, it has come down with the dreaded inverted image problem. In case you have had the good fortune of not having this problem, it looks as though you are looking through the screen from inside the device. Yesterday I called Compaq, and today Airborne should be delivering a box to be used for shipping the iPAQ for repair. It will probably be gone for a week, so in the mean time I need to use one of my other Pocket PCs. The problem is that neither my HP Jornada 540 or my Casio EM-500 have 32 MB of RAM, so I may be limited in loading up my full compliment of applications. Since I already carry the Jornada around with the Ministrel modem attached, I think I will just use that while the iPAQ is in for repairs. I've been keeping a 48 MB CompactFlash card in the Jornada so I will attempt to load the applications and many of my data files on to that card.

Palm halves revenue forecast, exits deal As time passes Palm looks more and more like Apple. Palm is getting crushed in the market, and today's news that their current quarter's revenues will be half of it's forcast will probably lead to a huge drop in it's stock. Further, Palm announced that they will not be acquiring Extended Systems. No doubt that is due in large part to the drop in their stock price. When Palm announced that they were acquiring Extended Systems it was hailed as important step to enabling Palm to grow their corporate market share. Without this acquisition one now has to wonder how Palm will grow the corporate market, which have identified as being vital to their business.
Will Palm still exist by this time next year, or will there be a merger of Handspring and Palm?

Handspring browses with MSN - Tech News - CNET.com It seems all of the tech journalists covering this are somewhat surprised by Handspring putting money in the coffers of a competitor. They also tend want to spin the idea that Handspring is considering a switch to Windows CE, something that I personally doubt will happen.

Silicon Alley News: Is Vindigo's Deal with Palm a Sign? "Part of the long-term problem for Vindigo is the same headache facing many companies in these dark days for start-ups. If the Palm distribution deal is the answer, what happens when Microsoft or Compaq uses their sheer muscle to develop/acquire a similar service and bundle into their own PDAs?" Or how about this twist: Microsoft aquiring Vindigo? After all, why should Microsoft sit back and let Palm keep aquiring pieces and parts: Extended Systems, Peanut Press, etc..

Palm m505 and Nintendo Color Gameboy This page compares the m505's screen with the Nintendo Gameboy, which apparently uses the same technology. The writer says there is no comparison, the Gameboy's is better. I dare say a comparison with a Compaq iPAQ, which also has a reflective screen, would demonstrate even further just how bad the 505's screen is.
So, in the final analysis, the only positive thing coming with the release of the M500 and M505 is expandable storage via SD/MMC. Otherwise you pretty much just have a Palm V. The clock is ticking and the cow is getting dry.

infoSync : The Sega emulators Soon you will be able to play Sega games on your Pocket PC. If you combine all the emulators now available with the native games that have been developed, the Pocket PC is starting to become a serious gaming platform. I think Microsoft or the hardware OEMs need to really pump up this marketing angle for kids, and by all means, Compaq has got to fix the multiple-button press issue.

Lately I've been trying out new Pocket PC software. Last week I found Nyditot's Virtual Display, which is similar to Jimmy Landscape, but works on HP Jornadas in addition to other Pocket PCs, plus provides higher resolutions. I bought it at Handango and checked it out. Compressed 640x480 in landscape is readable when you crank the text in PIE to its largest setting. <via Pocket PC Thoughts>
I've never played SimCity, but soon I will be able to play it on my Pocket PC if I wish.
You can now listen to radio on your Pocket PC via streaming MP3. I just tried this with my Omnisky connection, and Omnisky is not letting me through to www.live365.com.

This Computerworld article attempts to explain the differences between Palm OS and Windows CE from a more technical perspective. I think the point being made is that corporations should choose which handheld platform to use based on their needs. (Funny, where have we heard that before?) The writer points out that while the "bloat" of Windows CE is ridiculed by people who want a simple organizer, it becomes much more valuable to software developers planning on developing rich applications. This last comment coincides I think with marketing information from Europe showing that Windows CE devices are obtaining huge penatrations in the corporate space. My only nit with the article is that it seems to come up short -- it establishes a good premise, starts supporting it, and then stops.
