I think I have found an incompatibility between the latest version of AvantGo and the Novatel Ministrel CDPD modem. This version of AvantGo has a wireless section that is supposed to enable you to directly browse content via their proxy server. It doesn't work with my HP Jornada 540 and Ministrel modem. Whenever I tap a link I get a "page cached" message -- basically, AvantGo is trying to find the page on the device and doesn't find it. This evening I decided to try it out using a Ethernet card direct to the Internet and it worked. So, it recognizes Ethernet as a valid connection but not the Ministrel. I do notice that the Ministrel modem has a entry in Connections, but not in modem or network. If you have a Pocket Spider or a Sierra Wireless Aircard and you use AvantGo, could you give try?

This appears to be the first application that I have seen which requires Linux on a Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC.

AIM | SMS | Home You can now send AOL Instant Messenger messages to cell phones that support SMS, such as those provided by Voicestream. You need to have an AIM account set up first.

Here is something cool. VoiceStream is now supporting SMS. I can send 50 & receive messages per month on my account, and after that they are 5 cents each. There is also mention of a service called WebStream, which is not yet available, but which I think might be their GPRS product. It could be an interesting summer.

Dale and Jason tell me that I now have a reason to go to the Denver Zoo the next time I am visiting my in-laws. They will be renting Pocket PCs this summer to members (I guess I will have to join first) to be used why strolling the zoo. If that weren't cool enough, the information will be serviced up to the devices using Bluetooth. I think that just might make it the first significant Bluetooth implementation using Pocket PCs.

Tour manager Dunn reports sunshine in Redmond. Is it true, or was he dreaming? He also reports that Pocket Innovations has released a program called
Classmate, which they call a "student assistance program." Over the years I have seen several requests in the newsgroup and other fori requesting such software.

Code City - CityTime, AddresBookR for Palm OS If you are looking for an application that will show you the times for different cities around the world then CityTime might be the app you are looking for. I am told this is a port of an app that was first available for Palm, and I am wondering if this is the app Palm was always using in photos of the Palm IIIc.

Extended Battery Expansion Pack Soon? - pocketPCpassion Discussion Board It looks like Compaq might coming out with a new iPAQ sleeve that is a battery extender. The reaction on Brighthand is fairly negative, with people wondering how this would be better than an external extender such as DataNation's. One benefit that I can think of is portability. You can not easily carry an iPAQ around while the DataNation extender is plugged in.

From Compaq's recent earnings announcement: "Pocket iPAQs accounted for 11 percent of Compaq's first-quarter personal computer sales, Winkler said" The announcement also says that the iPAQ Pocket PC offers twice the profit margin of a desktop computer. Now we know why $500 is such a sweat spot.

Yahoo - Palm Losing Grip on Market Share "Palm's OS share rose just a scant 0.3 percent, suggesting that while Palm's licensing strategy has allowed partners, such as Handspring, to siphon off hardware sales, it has failed to increase the Palm operating system's slice of the overall handheld market." Another problem I think Palm has is in a comparison between the changes that have occured with Windows CE vs. the Palm OS. People are beginning to compare the significant amount of change that Microsoft has done with every release of its software to how much Palm OS has done, and conclude that the Palm OS is not growing. Palm's answer has been that people want simplicity and the OS is good enough for that. I think people are starting to translate Palm's simplicity argument as their excuse. The positive spin that Pocket PC has received is starting to make long-time Palm users considering a "step-up" and that step is to Pocket PC. Just this weekend I talked with such a user at a CompUSA. He was looking to go from a Palm to an HP Jornada. Why? Because he wants to step up to color, and he uses Microsoft Office at work. I think the analysts will be closely watching how the M500 and M505 sell. If those don't do well, there might be some big time problems for Palm.

infoSync: "Although GPRS cards compatible with the Compaq iPAQ PocketPC were supposed to hit the shelves in April, there has been no sign of them as of yet. Unfortunately, it looks like Option and XirCom, being the only two companies that have announced such a solution, both are having trouble getting their solutions to the market, and you shouldn't expect anything to show up in stores before in May or June."

Compaq has updated the download page for the iPAQ Pocket PC with a link to the 1.77 ROM, but that link is currently not active. This is probably a sign that the download will be available real soon now.

Dale seems to think that this rumor of a Linux-based handheld from HP is legit. The 133 Mhz StrongArm processor doesn't make too much sense to me. However, I wouldnt be surprised if HP followed Compaq's lead and came out with a handheld that used Flash RAM for the system so that it could be switched between Pocket PC and Linux. HP's seems to be making a stronger committment to the Pocket PC rather than less. First they came out with the Jornada 525, and they are starting to provide better in-store displays of their devices.

Here is a head scratcher. This afternoon I bought a LaserJet 2200dse, which has a built-in infrared port. I can use the infrared port to print from an Intermec 6651and a HP Jornada 820, but not the HP Jornada 720. For some reason the 720 doesn't find the printer, even though the printer does indicate that it is communicating with something.

Yesterday I spent a little bit of time in my local CompUSA. (I am planning on buying a laser printer.) Based on what I saw there I have to say it appears Compaq has fixed the backlog problems with the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC. For the first time this store had plenty of iPAQs in stock, both the color versions and monochrome versions. (In fact, when I go to CompUSA's web site it reports that all of the metro Detroit stores have the 3635 in stock.) The color unit is the iPAQ 3635, which comes with a CompactFlash sleeve, expandable case, and two games for $599, which is the price that Compaq recommends. I don't know how much they were asking for the monochrome iPAQ, and there were no demos of either models available. As if I wasn't surprised enough by the mere presence of the iPAQs in this store, I was absolutely flabbergasted when I found that they also had accessories. About 8 USB cradles; 10 CompactFlash sleeves; 1 Compact "Executive" leather case. Wow! Then I looked around a little more and found a Hewlett-Packard display showing demo units of the new Jornada 525 Pocket PC, alongside a 548 and a Ministrel 540 modem. This is the first instore-display that I have seen for any Pocket PC, and in this case it was directly across an aisle from the Palm display, and right next to the Handspring display. Unfortunately, the devices are secured to the display under plexi glass so you cannot pick them up, but there were on, so I could take out my trusty stylus and check out the 525 for a little bit. I think the price of the 525 was $399, again a little pricey, and I couldn't tell if they had any units in stock. The CompUSA web site shows the 548 in-stock, but has no information about the 525.
