If you are looking for a game to play on your Pocket PC, PocketGamer.org should be the first place that you check.

Jason is rallying the Pocket PC community to help fight cancer. The effort is similar to the widely known SETI@Home project in that it involves running software on home computers to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. It runs in the background on your desktop computer, using all of the spare CPU cycles. When I check with Task Manager I see that 100% of my CPU is pretty much in use. There is a CNET article on this effort, as well as a lengthy slashdot thread. It's good to see the Pocket PC community move a bit beyond our favorite gadgets to reach out and help others, even in a small way.

Compaq will be remarketing Wireless Internet Services from WorldCom and Ricochet. The
service provides 128kb wireless internet access for $74.95 and is available in 13 cities in the United States. The wireless Internet kit, which I assume includes the
wireless modem, costs $299. I wonder what WorldCom's involvement is with this. And I wonder whether this partnership with Compaq provides Metricom the cash
they need to keep in operation. You will find more details here.

I made a discovery last week by accident. The power supply that comes with a iPAQ also works
with the Novatel Ministrel modem. The connector of the power supply looks exactly the same
and I accidentally plugged in the iPAQ supply to the Ministrel and charged it. I
didn't realize that I was using the wrong supply until after the modem was recharged.

Times2 Tech will upgrade your Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC to 64 MB for $149. Dale Coffing has had the upgrade done to his iPAQ and will be receiving it shortly, so I am sure he will have one of his great reviews posted. The upgrades are done by a guy who has done similar upgrades for the old HP 200LX. You can also read a fascinating discussion about the upgrade.

I've been trying to get Ruksun Software Technologies' News Force program to work on my HP 540 to no avail. What is worse is that their web site has absolutely no support information. In my first attempt I installed to a storage card, and when I try to run the program I keep getting a message saying it can't find some files. I looked at the program's entry in the registry and tried to move the location of the *.DAT file but that did not good. So I removed the program, removed it's registry entries, and installed the program on to the local device. It shows me the same error messages. Grrr... I've been trying to use Inkspot, which does actually run, but it has some quirks in the UI that make it very frustrating to use. So I guess I will have to fire off an email to Ruksun. Bother.

infoSync : Let's play some golf! "A new PocketPC game called Miniature Golf features some of the most jaw-dropping graphics we've seen, and should make any miniature golf lover go gaga." I'm not much of a game player, but I do observe that the games now available for Pocket PCs far surpass anything that was available for Palm-sized PCs. For that matter, these games surpass anything available for Palm or Handspring. Could games become the killer app for Pocket PCs?

Wapaka Java WAP Browser Extends To Palm, Pocket PC Another WAP browser appears to be on the way for Pocket PCs. Interesting in that the article suggests the browser is written in Java. Digital Airways even has a demo of Wapaka running on their web site.

Compaq.com - iPAQ Pocket PC - Accessories This page has the RS-232 serial cable listed, which I mentioned in my earlier post today. The CNET article suggests the purpose of this cable is to connect to cellular phones, but I am not sure how practical that is. They have only tested the cable with the Motorola StarTac ST7867W. For your phone to work the phone will have to be a complete modem, and work as a Hayes compatible modem via COM1. If not you will need software. The cable will be more useful for connecting other serial devices like GPSes, and the iBIZ Keyboard. No price is listed, and the Buy It button is not available.

Acrobat Reader tweaked for Palms So I wonder how well that is going to look on Palm? And why the heck aren't they doing something for Handheld and Pocket PCs? BTW, this article does have some Pocket PC news hidden in it. Apparently Compaq is providing a serial cable to connect to cell phones, which you can use as a modem. That means you wouldn't need an expansion pack to connect up to a cell phone via Socket's Digital Phone Card. They also announced a $399 bundle that includes the monochrome iPAQ, CompactFlash expansion pack, and Peacemaker professional. That's $50 over the $349 retail price of the monochrome iPAQ.

Spring Comdex (Chicago) 2001 Trip Report Article The Gadgeteer has posted a nice trip report of Spring Comdex that includes pictures of the Millitech handheld devices that I mentioned earlier this past week. I am with Julie and Judie that the Triton is one cool device. It displays a full 640 x 480 screen in landscape on a Pocket PC-sized device, though it runs the Handheld PC 2000 software. That makes the icons on the screen very tiny. The screen is gorgeous and the device is very light. I just wonder what battery life will be like.

Pocket PC Passion -  Dual Slot PC Card Expansion Pack Have you seen the Budweiser commercial of the dog that eats a fridge full of food and expands in size? That is what comes to mind when I look at the pictures of an iPAQ Pocket PC in the Dual Slot PC Card Expansion Pack. I can see the benefits, but I am not so sure I would want to lug the extra bulk around.
