Yahoo: "Speechworks, with funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), responsible for the development of the principles of the Internet, has been working on the research of speech-based multimodal access to content on wireless devices over the last six months, Phillips said. The company is currently working with Compaq Computer Corp., the No. 1 PC maker, on how to extend the capabilities of its iPAQ pocket PC."

Is it just me, or does this graphic of Dave look a bit like Howie Long? BTW, if you own an iPAQ you should bookmark Dave's site.

Will RIM Blackberry and other handhelds bring about the demise of the notebook? "This means the approximately 2.5 million Java software developers would be able to create programs for RIM handhelds. It would be even more amazing if RIMs, Pocket PCs, and Palm licensees all used J2ME applications." I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for J2ME for Pocket PCs. So far Microsoft hasn't budged on Java for Windows CE, so I would expect to see C# support before Java.

I continue learning the quirks of the Novatel Minstrel 540 wireless modem. The modem has a sleep feature that is designed to save battery life. Basically the modem goes to sleep but maintains enough of a connection to receive push messages. Whenever you want to reconnect to the Internet it re-establishes the PPP connection. That works on with Inbox, but PIE has problems with re-establishing the PPP connection. AvantGo's modem sync has complete fits with it. And for some reason firing up Inbox and checking email doesn't keep the modem awake long enough to hop over to AvantGo and have it do its thing. The only way to really make it work well is to turn off sleep mode, which drains batteries faster. Hopefully this will be fixed with version 4 of AvantGo which is supposed to be more wireless aware. I've been finding that AvantGo modem syncing with the 19.2 connection is dog slow. You really need a 38K or greater connection to have modem sync work at a reasonable speed.

Is Palm Losing Its Grip? I think this article does a good job of explaining the problems hardware manufacturers are having in trying to license the Palm OS. This article is probably written in light of all the problems Palm has had in the last couple of weeks.

Hawkins Talks While I was reading this Business 2.0 article a thought popped in my head: Jeff Hawkins is a lot like Steve Jobs. Like Steve, Jeff has complete control over the design of Handspring products. Everything is flowing through him. Everything comes back to Jeff's art. In the process Jeff does nothing but put down every single competitor he has, denying their strengths and only pointing out their weaknesses. There are similarities between Palm/Handspring and Apple. Both created a new market, and at one time Apple was as hot as Palm/Handspring. The question is, in the long term will Palm/Handspring suffer the same fate? Is that fate destined given that everything flows through one person?

iambic created TimeReporter originally for the Apple Newton. It used to be my main time tracking application when I used my Newton. The ported their app to Palm, but apparently couldn't bring themselves to do their own port to Pocket PC so the partnered with Great Plains.

Great Plains - Dynamics "TimeReporter for Project Series is a time-and-expense reporting application for Palm and Windows Pocket PC handheld computing devices. It synchronizes time-and-expense data via the Internet or a local area network to Great Plains Project Series. Developed in collaboration with Iambic Software, TimeReporter improves data entry accuracy and collection, reduces paperwork and increases productivity by allowing anytime, anywhere information access via small, mobile computing devices. First introduced last September, Windows Pocket PC support has been added." Now here is an interesting note, Microsoft is aquiring Great Plains.

Yahoo - Autodesk Reinforces Commitment to Channel Partners; Provides 2,500 Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs to Its Resellers Compaq has had a couple of good wins in the corporate markets. With the bad performance news out of Palm today, I wonder how nervous they are over there at Palm.

Another thing that I am finding out about Omnisky is they aren't providing the same content for Pocket PCs as they do for Palm. Yesterday I spent a little time trying to find their Technology channel or Northwest Airline's content. In the process I found that the version of the Omnisky software that came with my modem is not the current version.

I've been using the Novatel Ministrel 540 wireless modem with Omnisky since last Thursday and so far I have to report mixed results. Omnisky appears to have performance problems, particularly with their mail server. In fact, I find Omnisky's way of handling mail to be problematic. You can retrieve email from any POP3 server on the Internet, but they prefer to have it go through their server. Supposedly there is compression going on that speeds up the transfer of the email. The problem is their server seems to have a problem staying up, which means I can't get to my email that way. Email happens to be one of the most important uses for wireless access. I can go straight to my POP3 server, but then there appears to be something strange with Omnisky's SMTP server. It doesn't like the way that my outgoing email is addressed when I respond directly to the mail I receive from my server. I think it is really complaining about some type of authentication, but I don't know for sure.

Wow! I continue to be amazed by the inventiveness of Pocket PC Users. Whitney Lubean has come up with a great way to combine an iPAQ CompactFlash sleeve with the Vaja case that practically adds no bulk to the iPAQ. Check out these pictures.

BrightHand has reviewed the Intermec Model 70 Pocket PC, and it is not a surprise to me that this is a nice Pocket PC but overpriced. At $449 it has a color Pocket PC price with a monochrome screen, only 16 MB of RAM, and no USB. And worst of all, IMHO, it does not come with an AC Adapter. If this is correct be warned, if you don't order an adapter when you order this device you won't be able to use it since the first thing you have to do is charge the battery.

Dale really likes VNC. When I tried it I found it to be really slow across a 10 MB Ethernet LAN, particularly in comparison to PC Anywhere or Windows Terminal Services.

Just when you thought the Handheld PC was extinct there comes a flurry of announcements. In the last couple of weeks there were actually three new Handheld PCs announced, the HP Jornada 710, the NEC MobilePro 790 and the ASUS AH100. The HP and NEC devices will not ship in the United States, which probably maps to the larger market share for Windows CE in Europe. Most of that market share is due to corporate sales, and I suspect many of those corporations are asking for Handhelds. There is no word as to where the ASUS unit will ship, nor its cost. I think ASUS is a new player in the Handheld market.
