HP Jornada PC Companions - HP Jornada 700 Series - Comparison Now this is interesting. This comparison suggests that the 710 won't be sold in the US. The main difference from the 720 is that the 710 won't have a built-in modem, nor come with a cradle.

HP Jornada PC Companions - Home How clueless is HP? They are making announcements at CeBIT this week regarding new Jornadas and their web site dedicated to them doesn't have a shred of information. Their German subsidiary does have a page up with a bit of information, but not much in the way of details. I've read a fair amount of information about these new devices, and all of it is conflicting. I have yet to find anything official from HP about the price of the 525 and the information I have seen has prices ranging from $350 to $425. Then there is the 710, which I thought was supposed to be a lower cost handheld, but the price I see puts it at the 720 level for price, which makes some sense since it seems to have the same specs.

Pen Computing's Conrad Blickenstorfer reported to Brighthand that the screen on the Jornada 525 appears to be brighter than the 545's. It seems that the by "lower cost screen" they meant 256 colors. Conrad also reports that the 525 does come with a lid, but he seems to think that you could attach one of the color lids that you can buy from HP Shopping.

Dale has played with the new HP 525, and he reports that it does not have a flip-top cover and a 256 color depth screen. Though the processor is the same, Dale says the 525 runs faster. It sounds like some interesting trade-offs were made, the question is, will it sell? So far I haven't seen an official price though speculation is around $350.

Microsoft Makes Headway with Mobile Deals These announcements aren't particularly important to Pocket PC users, but interesting nonetheless. Apparently Microsoft has signed a deal with Motorola for a version of their 2-way pager tied with MSN, just like AOL and Yahoo have down with RIM. Personally, I think the RIM pager is better. There are also deals with Mitsubishi for using Mobile Explorer and Stinger, and mention of the HP Jornada 525.

Yesterday Microsoft announced Hailstorm. It is basically the storage of data on centralized Microsoft servers. To store your information on those servers one will have to pay a subscription fee. So the question to Pocket PC users will be, do you want to store your Pocket Outlook data on Microsoft's servers? (Assuming that a server sync product is made available to enable Pocket PCs to support Hailstorm.) I personally don't have a problem with Microsoft trying to sell this service, and I might even consider it. What everyone I think needs to pay attention to is whether you can use their products without Hailstorm if you choose to. For Pocket PC users that means still being able to sync data with Outlook on a desktop computer or sync with a server. If Microsoft forces us down the server path then many (including myself) may strongly consider using other products.
Obviuosly, those who think Microsoft's Internet security is shoddy at best will think that this is a dumb idea.

BrightHand says the HP Jornada 525 will be silver like the iPAQ and cost $359, only $10 more than the monochrome iPAQ. Now, will that put pressure on Compaq to bring the price of the 3150 down?
Steve also says that HP will be announcing a Type I CompactFlash digital camera at CeBIT. Hmmm... interesting.

If you travel a lot with your Pocket PC you may know how frustrating it can be to schedule appointments across time zones. Dale found this Pocket Calendar plugin that makes it easier to fix appointments so that they are correct for the time zone in which the appointment will occur. It's not as easy as simply specifying in the appointment slip the time zone, but from the description it sounds like this plugin will do the trick.

pocketPCpassion has two bits of news relating to updates for Pocket PCs. First is the PC Card fix for those iPAQS running ROM 1.28 and 1.69. This fix addresses problems people have had getting CompactFlash modem cards to work with their iPAQs. I believe the update replaces the PCMCIA.DLL file on the device. The file name for this Softpaq is SP16775.EXE, and information about this patch came out last Friday.
What is news is another patch to update the USB and serial drivers on iPAQs running ROM 1.28, and the file name is SP16776.EXE. It sounds like this patch provides USB part of the 1.69 Flash ROM upgrade, which was the main reason for the upgrade in the first place.
You will notice that both of these upgrades do not Flash your device. Rather, the follow the traditional method of updating Windows CE by copying over existing ROM files in RAM. (This is a feature called shadow RAM.) Since the USB & serial drivers may have been the main cause of the problems that existed when flashing iPAQs to Version 1.69, my guess is that when Compaq re-releases the 1.69 Flash update you will be required to install this driver first.
Finally, Dale also points to information about Service Pack 1 for Pocket PCs, which is provided by a Microsoft Knowledgebase article. I suspect these contain the Microsoft updates that are part of Compaq's 1.69 Flash ROM, and previously not available for other Pocket PCs. Since you don't flash other devices keep in mind that installing this service pack will use internal storage space. So far I haven't found the actual service pack files. In the past those have been provided by the hardware OEMs.

HP to unveil a less pricey handheld - Tech News - CNET.com The CeBIT conference is this week, and HP will be making some news officially announcing the price for the new Jornada 525 Pocket PC. Supposedly HP will be lowering the price because they are changing the screen technology. If memory serves me right, Compaq also announced that they will be changing their screen technology. Could Compaq come out with a cheaper color iPAQ?

Yahoo - Iomega PocketZip Drive Compatible With New Compaq iPAQ Dual PC Card Expansion Pack Ever since the Clik! drives were first announced Handheld and Pocket PC users have wished that they could use these drives with their devices. It now appears that some users will have this wish realized provided that they buy the $199 dual PC Card sleeve. The problem has been due to the fact that while the PocketZip drive is a Type II card, it requires Type III rails. I believe this means that when you put the PocketZip drive in the sleeve you will not be able to use any other card.

PocketMoney for PalmOS One of the things not mentioned on the page describing the alpha version of PocketMoney for Pocket PCs is whether it will sync with Quick or MS Money. As you can see on this page describing the Palm OS version, that version includes Macintosh and Windows conduits for uploading and downloading Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) and Tab Delimited Format (TDF) data. If the Pocket PC version of this program provides with interchange of data with Quicken and MS Money then this will be a very popular program amongst Pocket PC users.

PocketMoney for Windows CE PocketMoney is the very first money management program that I every used on a handheld. Back in '94 it ran on the Newton OS, and I used it as my main money mangement program when I used my Newton. In '99 it was ported to the Palm OS, and now it is being ported to Pocket PC. Even though Catamount hired Jarosoft to write this program, I think it is very good news that another long time handheld developer is now supporting the Pocket PC.
