HP lures Motorola exec to scrutinize new gadget group - Tech News - CNET.com CNET is reporting that HP may drop the Pocket PC OS in favor of Linux or Palm. Someone really needs to ask whether it is the operating system that is holding the Jornada back, or the hardware. Frankly, when you compare the Jornada 540s to the Compaq iPAQ and the Casio Pocket PCs I come the conclusion that the Jornada's hardware sucks. The speed isn't near close enough, the screen is the worst on a Pocket PC, and it is the heaviest. Switching operating systems isn't going to fix these problems, it will only be fixed by a new hardware design.

Yahoo - Hewlett-Packard to make handheld PC a phone too Interesting news from the GSM conference. Apparently HP has signed a deal with a mobile phone manufacturer that will enable one to use their Pocket PC as a cell phone and data modem. I am not if I would be interested in using my Jornada as a cell phone, but if I could connect my Jornada and my regular cell phone to the same number and service, and alternate between the two, then that could be useful. At any rate, the data connectivity portion of this sounds like the most appealing.

Yahoo - Verizon Wireless Launches Internet Access For Pocket PC Now we are talking! $149 for the modem, $24.95 per month for unlimited access to the Internet (probably at 19.2). Bad news is, Verizon's CDPD coverage is very limited and not in the Detroit area! :( But this is the pricing that I am looking for, so maybe Verizon will get their network built out fast and put some pressure on the other guys.

Internet World Wireless 2001 How big is wireless Internet access becoming? Big enough to warrant its own CMP conference. Microsoft will have a Pocket PC booth at this conference, but I don't think there will be any Pocket PC announcements made. If you are going to the show be sure to stop by the booth and say hello to Jason and Dale.

Microsoft invades the airwaves This is a big week for Microsoft as the latest Windows CE Platform, their Smartphone product code named Stinger, gets its first official showings at the 3GSM Word Congress wireless show in Cannes, France. Gary Krakow has written a good article about Stinger that includes screen shots. Stinger is very important to Microsoft because it addresses a potential market that numbers in the multi-millions vs. the high thousands, low millions of Pocket PCs.
