I have finished my first day at the DCI Mobile and Field Force Automation conference. It was a long day with a lot of walking. This conference is mainly about software, so there aren't many gadgets being shown. However, Nextcell is here, showing off their Pocket Spider modem. The demo that I saw seemed to work as good as one would expect at pure 19.2. You won't see any Nextcell modems at your local AT&T store, but they are in negotiations with Verizon. They are currently working on GPRS solutions that should be available by the end of this year.
I also talked with a software developer who told me that Java development on Windows CE is hopeless because the footprint is too large, making performance terrible.

NEC may join handheld field Confusing. Isn't my NEC MobilePro 750C a handheld? Or are they talking about pen-based handhelds? Or are they talking about being on the fence in regards to coming out with a Handheld PC 2000 unit?

Palmax to merge with Compal "Compal claims Palmax will move 350,000-400,000 units in 2001, a considerable growth over the 110,000 shipped in 2000. Palmax has supposedly received an ODM order from a major US systems manufacturer, scheduled to ship out in February, and last year it signed a deal with China-based Legend Computers to manufacture PDAs and handheld PCs. To offset the sudden jump in incoming orders, Compal will offer Palmax additional production capacity at its facilities in Pingjen, Taoyuan County." A good chunk of those orders are Pocket PCs.
