pocketPCpassion.com - WhereInTheWorld Dale must be very confident in his skiing skills. I would crash and burn and wipe out my iPAQ in the process.

Earlier this week Pyra announced that all of their staff had been let go, and that Ev was running Blogger on his own. I don't know if everyone has decided to jump ship, or whether Ev has finally got the workload distributed accross all their new servers, but Blogger seems to be jammin right now. I'm going to stick it out with Blogger until they are gone, which I hope will not happen. It's just the best tool for maintaining this site.

My buddy Dan Bowman is a big Linux guy. Today he emailed to me the link to General Paranoyaxc Software which appears to have several Unix tools for Windows CE devices. They look like they are for older Handheld PCs, but if you are wishing for Emacs for your handheld this is the place to check out.

My first PDA was an Apple Newton, so I have to admit to a fantasy. That is that some day Apple would return to the PDA world with a device as good as Newton was, only with none of the problems Newton had. Could it be this? I wonder how much Apple would charge for something like that? At least $1000.. probably approaching $1500. But it would be the coolest looking PDA on the market, with the best screen. The best work of art in a PDA, Steve Jobs' work of art.
Update: It looks like the GIF I linked to above may have been pulled... I'll leave the link there just in case it reappears. It really did look cool.

PDABuzz has posted the December 2000 sales figures from NPD Intellect. First off, I don't get why Compaq isn't even showing up. They are supposedly hard to get because they are being snapped up right away, shouldn't that translate to sales? It actually looks like Casio picked up several ticks from the previous months, and Palm dropped below 70%

The secrets of NiMH and other batteries Ok, this article is about notebook computer batteries, but I think it does a decent job explaining some of the differences between battery types. As Pocket PC users we know that batteries are our friends.

Compaq Unable to Meet iPAQ Demand "To help meet demand, Compaq has bumped up the specifications on the device's grayscale version (the best-selling version offers a brilliant color display) and soon will offer an alternate color display, which the company hopes will be easier and less expensive to produce." Would you buy an iPAQ that had the same screen as the HP Jornada? For what price? This same article also suggests that Compaq is designing an iPAQ that includes a built-in cell phone.

Jerry Pournelle: "Last spring, at PC-Expo I encountered the NEC MobilePro 750. It was love at first sight, and at that time I gave it my "cold dead fingers" award - that's the only way NEC was going to get it back. Since then I have written thousands of words on that little jewel, and it is hands down the winner of the Chaos Manor Users Choice Award for True Laptop systems, and Microsoft gets a Chaos Manor Orchid for the Windows CE Operating System that powers it."

I've had a 1 GB IBM Microdrive for several weeks, but so far I haven't loaded much music on the drive. That is because I do not have a CF Card reader that will work with Type II CF Cards, which is what the microdrive requires. This evening I solved that problem by using a notebook computer. I plugged the microdrive into the PC Card adapter that came with it, and then plugged that into the Type II PC Card slot of the notebook. The notebook is running Windows 2000, and it required the drive without the need of any additional drivers. A check of My Computer shows that it was mounted as drive E. Next I connected the notebook to my home network, access network share that contains my MP3 files, and started copying the files down to the drive. At 10 MB I am sure that the file transfer was as fast, if not faster, than USB.

allNetDevices: - Automatic Wireless Sync Unveiled I am wondering how this would work. Since the software will initially work with RIM pagers, that means it is somehow using the same frequency as the Bell South Wireless Data network, or using their network. If it used BSWD that would mean that to sync your device with a desktop PC, the PC would have to have an Internet connection, which would be used to push all your data from the PC, across the network, to Bell South, and then down to the RIM. That sounds to be a bit of a long trip. That means to sync with a Pocket PC you sould need one of the CDPD network cards. A better solution would use 802.11b, and the best solution would use Bluetooth.

Compaq.com - Compaq Unveils Monochrome iPAQ Pocket PC Model with Immediate Availability This is the official press release. It reminded me of a good point, this unit might be well suited for vertical applications. I believe there was a Police Officer application that was going to use Aero 1520s, which got dropped. I wonder if they will go with this instead?

Compaq first released the 3100 in Europe, and when it came out BrightHand posted a review. Note that the review now incorrectly states that the 3100 is only shipping in the United States.

Compaq.com - iPAQ Pocket PC - H3100 Series Compaq has released the monochrome version of the iPAQ Pocket PC in the United States. Besides the fact that it has a monochrome screen, it also only comes with 16 MB of RAM. CompaqDirect has it listed for online ordering at $349, and I wonder whether that is priced competitively enough to go against the Palm V. I personally feel that this unit, with only 16 MB of RAM needs to be less than $300 to be worth while. It will also be interesting to see what availability is going to be like.

Dale Coffing reports that the Stowaway keyboard for the Compaq iPAQ has been officially released, and he has posted a review. Unfortunately, Dale also reports that it won't be available until Feburary 12 from Compaq DirectPlus at the earliest. General availability might not be until March. If the distribution of this is the same as the HP version of the keyboard, I would expect to find the keyboards at your local CompUSA. It also looks like Compaq has sweatened the deal a bit by including a carrying case, and the Compaq logo has been silk screened on the keyboard.

Several people are reporting success at restoring their dead iPAQs by performing the upgrade procedure via a serial cable. This confirms that the problems with the iPAQ ROM upgrade were due to USB communication problems. Given that the problems may be hardware related, I am beginning to think that any USB upgrade of this sort is not going to be 100% reliable.

Peter Koch has released an upgrade of Dialup Master so that it now runs on Pocket PC and Handheld PC 2000 devices. If you need to dial an online service that requires the use of a terminal window, and you want to script what you enter in that dialup window, then Dialup Master is the program you need.
