SD Card Support for EM-500 - pocketPCpassion Discussion Board Dale has posted a press release from Casio that confirms that the EM-500 will support Secure Digital (SD) Memory Cards. SD Cards have the same physical shape of MMC cards, and when Casio first announced that the EM-500 would have MMC it was speculated then that was really for SD support. SD is one of the ways the music industry is trying to prevent from pirated music.

It appears that the Starbucks - Microsoft wireless deal is getting a lukewarm reception. The article picked up my point about the need for having your own wireless capable device or notebook PC. However, I am surprised that there is no mention about the price.

Trium Mondo is another integrated Pocket PC & cell phone. Unlike Stinger, it looks like this one will run the full suite of Pocket PC applications. Interestingly, Mitsubishi is involved in this somehow.

ZDNet: Interactive Week: Microsoft, Starbucks Link Up Coffeehouses I've been thinking about the announcement this week that Microsoft will work with Starbucks to provide wireless Internet access in Starbuck stores. The wireless service will be provided by MobileStar, which provides wireless LAN connectivity in other public places like hotels and airports. Notice that this is wireless LAN, meaning 802.11b and/or HomeRF, both of which MobileStar supports. I find a couple of problems with this announcement. At first read the idea of walking in to a Starbucks and being able to connect wirelessly to the Internet sounds cool, but there are two problems. First, you need your own hardware. Second, it isn't free you will have to pay $15.95 to $59.95 per month depending on usage. Those prices sound absolutely ridiculous to me. In fact, because patrons have to supply their own hardware, I think Starbucks should be provding the access for nothing. I just don't see anyway this is going to fly, but I could be wrong. Another problem this presents is a clash between wireless LANS and WANS. If you are an iPAQ owner you could have one PC Card for wireless WAN access (like Omnisky) and a 802.11b card for wireless Ethernet. Would you want to switch cards when you walked in to a Starbucks? It would be a hassle, but one that you might want to do considering that the 802.11b connection would be faster. I am also wondering what Microsoft's involvement is in this. I presume they will be managing the wireless stuff for Starbucks, but that seems to be a huge burden that I wonder what the payback would be.

It looks like Palmax is finding more resellers of their Pocket PC products. infoSync is reporting that the LynkUs PocketPC in the works. One thing I am concerned about is price. What we need are lower priced Pocket PCs, not more higher priced "deluxe" models. OTOH, Pocket PCs with integrated PC Card slots can easily be used with wireless LANS which is being predicted as the "hot" technology for 2001.
I wonder if more people besides Dale have received their Palmax units yet?

Pocket PC Thoughts Jason has some enticing news regarding a call he received from Compaq regarding a fix for the iPAQ dust problems, and that the Stowaway keyboard may appear the end of this month or next month. My guess is that the keyboard will be make an appearance at CES.

Pocket PC Thoughts has a link to a Bluetooth CF Card from Peak Development that is supposed to be available January 1, 2001. Now, the question becomes, what can we use that with? The page also says there will be a Bluetooth PC card available in the same time frame. The question that I have is, does this Bluetooth card act and look like a network card to PCs, a serial connection, or something entirely new? If it acts like a network or serial connection then I think ActiveSync will work with it right now. If it is something new we wouldn't be able to sync. I did not find any information on how one could buy any of these cards.
