Arne describes Tegaron's Scout navigation system, which he descibes as today's best convergence product of Pocket PC and GSM. The system integrates a Pocket PC, GPS and GSM. Check out Arne's site to see how it would work. I particularly like the integration with contacts, which I think is so logical for a GPS system. And the use of SMS to calculate the best route based on actual traffic conditions sounds like a very good idea as well.

John Rappold proposes the compilation of a Pocket PC Anthology in MS Reader format to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Pocket PC in April. This sounds like a good idea to me. If you agree why not post a reponse to this thread. Thanks for the idea John.

Gary Krakow: "Let me recap this for you: I was connected to my office via modem, from a Paris hotel room, and I was downloading my e-mail, surfing the Web and streaming live audio from MSNBC Cable. All at the same time. All on a PDA. And computer manufacturers are wondering why desktop sales are beginning to slow down?" BTW, the PDA being used is a Compaq iPaq Pocket PC.

Since I can't find any Windows Media Video files to download to a CompactFlash card, I am hard pressed to find a good reason for installing Windows Media Player V7 for Pocket PC. You do gain the ability of Media Player releasing buttons when it is in the background, and to unmap buttons, but is that worth the 1 MB hit in storage space?

Proceed with Media Player V7 with caution. I don't know if it is related or not, but for some reason I can't move CD tracks ripped using Windows Meda Player V7 on my desktop, to my Pocket PC, if the desktop has Personal Rights Management enabled. Personal Rights Management is turned on by default, so chances are you have it enabled. I discovered this when I used Media Player V7 to move some old tracks to a CompactFlash card to test playing using the new player, and found that they wouldn't even load.

Microsoft has released Windows Media Player Version 7 for Pocket PCs. I have downloaded and installed this program on a Compaq iPaq, and here are a couple of very quick notes. First, the program occupies 1 MB of storage space. You can probably put this on a storage card, or a microdrive, but obviously if you do then that is where the media will have to be. It appears to play Windows Media Video files, but I don't know where to download such files to test on the iPaq, so I don't know if it works. The original media player stays on the device, and a second shortcut for the Version 7 player is added to the start menu. One good thing is that you can now configure the player to release buttons when it is in the background. So, if you have the action button programmed to change the volume, you can then switch to Reader and use the action button to scroll pages.

Today was to be a travel day to Dallas. Except, Mother Nature intervened by sending a blizzard to Detroit. Tomorrow I will be travelling again, and over the next couple of days I may not have much time to update this site. It all depends on how the flight goes tomorrow.
