Here 3 Strong Challengers To Ruling Handheld is a case in point about Pocket PC prices. One would read this review, and might come to a conclusion that the Compaq iPaq is the best handheld. Then you get to the bottom and you find that the iPaq costs $499 while you can get a Sony Clie for $400 and a Diamond Mako for $399. Now, I personally think the iPaq is worth every penny of its $99 higher price over the Clie, but will the casual reader?

John Rappold writes about why K-12 needs less expensive Pocket PCs. I think he makes a good point about the price of Pocket PCs at it relates to market share. There is no doubt in my mind that if the current prices of Pocket PCs hold they will never overtake Palm or Handspring in market share. The question that Microsoft and their hardware OEMS have to ask themselves is whether they can live with that. It's ironic, isn't it, that in this case a Microsoft product (Pocket PC) is really playing the Apple Macintosh role. I can live with that, but I wonder if others can?

PDAK12 has a very good apples to apples price comparison of the Handspring Visor Prism and a HP Jornada 548. The point being made is that when you try to get both devices at the same level of functionality the Visor is $220 more expensive. Now, those who support Palm will say that they don't want or need the all the extras, which they say drives up the price of a Pocket PC. It would seem to me, however, that if you are a person who wants to play music on your device (for example) that Pocket PC is the best way to go.

BTW, you might want to bookmark this page to refer to if you ever run across a Palm vs. Pocket PC debate.

PocketPCThoughts.com has a link to an announcement saying NTT DoCoMo to release Pocket PC-based PDA (001206). Jason, you are right that NTT DoCoMo is a very large wireless provider in Japan, and I believe they recently announced a partnership with AT&T Wireless. They are beyind i-Mode, which I think is the most widely used wireless protocol in the world. (Not CDMA, not CDPD, not GSM) This announcement could be very big for Microsoft & Pocket PC because NTT has been very successful at selling cell phones that provided wireless access to the Internet to young and old alike. I wonder if this will lead to any i-Mode support on the Pocket PC?

I just downloaded and installed the latest copy of PocketTV and found a bug in its setup program. The setup program puts shortcuts for PocketTV in both the Start Menu and the Programs folders. Consequently, if you go to Settings, Menus to take it out of the start menu you can't. You need to manually delete one of the two shortcuts to make everything work as it should.

Note to any Pocket PC developers reading this.. I think it is really bad form to put a shortcut in the Start Menu. Many Pocket PC users have their Start Menu set just the way they like it, and don't want you messing with it.

HomeRF 6630 Compact Flash Adapter This is the page for Proxim's CompactFlash wireless ethernet adapter. As I understand it, this product is to be sold to OEMs. So, the question is, when will it be available and for how much? The good news is that drivers are available for CE 2.11 and 3.0 devices. This past weekend I bought a Symphony HomeRF PC Card and found out that the Proxim RangeLan2 driver on the Handheld PC 2000 is not compatible with the HomeRF card.

Yahoo - BSQUARE Announces New Version of WinDK Extension for Bluetooth for Windows CE Operating System If you aren't a developer you probably think this announcement is insigificant. Its importance to users is that BSQUARE's development kit will be available to enable hardware companies to make Windows CE drivers for their Bluetooth products. Without the drivers they won't work with our devices, so this type of development kit is important for users wishing to use Bluetooth devices with Windows CE devices.

Casio Cassiopeia EM-500 PDA Review @ PCinsight This review o the EM-500 suggests that it is unique in providing a backup battery. It is true that neither the Compaq iPaq or the HP Jornada Pocket PCs do not have backup batteries, however, older Palm-size and Handheld PCs did include backup batteries. So, a backup battery is not something new with the EM-500. I also find it interesting that not enough emphasis is placed on the fact that the EM-500 only provides 16 MB of RAM, which I think is simply too small for a new Pocket PC. In my opinion the 16 MB devices are not cheap enough to warrant buying them over a 32 MB model. Despite the fact that you can expand storage space with MMC or CompactFlash cards, one can never have enough internal RAM.
