Fall Comdex starts this coming Friday. I am building a directory of web sites containing Comdex information, to help me and anyone else keep track of Comdex happenings. The directory will include a Pocket PC section, so if you have are going to Comdex and filing reports for any sites I would appreciate the URL... I'll add it to the directory. You can email it to me at subs@fmcpherson.com.

This afternoon I went to the Microsoft Extreme broadcast, which was shown in 30 cities across the country. Last spring's Extreme broadcast attracted a lot of interest for Pocket PC users because it was so close to the launch on April 19.
At that time the Pocket PC section was last in the broadcast. This time the Pocket PC lead the broadcast. I thought Beth Goza did a great job demonstrating all the connectivity options for the Pocket PC. Unfortunately Beth did imply that some of the options, such as the Novatel and Nextcell modems are available now. To my knowledge they aren't. But they should be real soon now, so perhaps that's a nit.
So far there isn't a link to a webcast of the broadcast, but I wouldn't be surprised to see one become available sometime next week. If you didn't go it will be worth watching, if nothing more to see and learn more about Beth. Derek Brown makes an appearance (nice hat Derek! What's that about free beer to Pocket PC users?) and I am not entirely sure, but I think Phil Holden even makes something of a cameo appearance.

So far not much attention has been paid to Compaq's quality problems with the iPaq. If you spend any time at all in Internet newsgroups, or forums such as Brighthand's you can read plenty tales of woe. Jason reminds us that those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it.

Sticky has notes for connecting an iPaq to a Proxim Symphony network. This is good news for me, since I have Symphony installed at home. It's good to know how make it work whenever I get my PC Card Sleeve. Time to ping MobilePlanet. (BTW, Sticky says that Symphony is 802.11b, but I don't think it is. I believe Proxim is using their own protocol, which they hoped would become the standard.)

CNET.com - News - Personal Technology - Compaq's iPaq goes wireless for work:
"Clark asserts that iPaq can gain Palm converts by offering something businesses really want and the rival handheld does not do well: email." Articles like these are making me thing that Comdex might actually have some interesting Pocket PC news.

View the power of Pocket PC Microsoft has put together this nice video that gives an overview of the capabilities of the Pocket PC. I think it would be a good idea if Microsoft made an MPEG version of this for playing on a Pocket PC using Pocket TV.

Yahoo - Consumers cool on mobile commerce-study:
"More than half of those who do not own handheld digital organisers said they would be more likely to purchase the device if it were integrated with mobile phones, a step that mobile phone and handheld computer makers such as Motorola Inc, Palm Inc. and Handspring Inc. are already taking." So is Microsoft, such as with with Stinger and Mobile Explorer. You can also turn a iPaq into a GSM phone.

Project Manager's Tool Kit If you are looking for a project management tool, this might be something to consider. At first blush it would appear there is no trial version of the app, but if you click on the third screen shot from the left you will find a link to the trial program.

PDA: Targus Announces Availability of Plug-in Cards for Pocket PCS; Partnership with Socket Produces Complete Line of Plug-in Cards - AnywhereYouGo.com Looks like Targus is reselling Socket's products, just like they resell Think Outside's Stowaway keyboard. Would could be good for users is that Targus has a huge distribution that includes retail stores, so we might be able to find these CompactFlash products at our local CompUSAs.

pocketpcgalaxy Call me silly, but if I called my site Pocket PC Galaxy I would have a picture of a Pocket PC on my home page.
We seem to be having an influx of Pocket PC sites doing the same thing, going at the same people, for the same purpose.

Autodesk - Autodesk OnSite View This site has a picture of an AutoCAD drawing on a Compaq iPaq Pocket PC. Look real closely at the bottom of that picture, notice the task bar at the bottom? Notice the home button at the far right? I've seen Palm-size PC apps running in emulation mode on a Pocket PC, and I don't recall the task bar ever looking like that. This really looks to me like they cut and pasted a screen from a Palm-size PC and put it on an iPaq, unless anyone else has seen different. While I can't be certain, I recommend that if you are at all interested in this program you call Autodesk and verify that this program does in fact run on Pocket PCs.

Pocket PC Passion - Homepage for Dale Coffing:
"I finally got my hands on the official Compaq Leather Style Pack. Here is my personal opinion and advice... save your money and go look elsewhere." Right now I am using this case as the primary case for my iPaq. I agree with Dale that it is a disappointment, but I don't think it is as bad as Dale makes it out to be. I do want to check the E&B case.

Pocket PC Thoughts: How much does the 1 gig IBM Microdrive effect battery life? Jason has been working to answer that question, and in his testing of continues MP3 play he gets 2 hours, 36 minutes and 13 seconds. That's compared to CompactFlash times of 5 hours and 57 minutes. Considering that the microdrive has moving parts, it is not surprising that it sucks batteries faster. Two hours isn't bad, but not long enough to play 1 gig worth of music. :)

Adrian's Rojak Pot has this very well written iPAQ vs. EM500 Comparison. Since this site is based in Malaysia some parts are not US centric, but the points made in this article are very well taken. The writer points out that the iPaq is shipping with serial cradles in Malaysia, and I believe that is true for all countries other than the United States. Given the number of problems we have seen with iPaq USB cradles that may be a good thing.
