PocketPCHow2 Log

Also a word of warning... the PocketPCHow2 site is somewhat under construction. I need to go through the links to verify that everything is still valid. In the mean time I know some links are not working, if you come across any please send them on to me.

A note about this log. I have set up this page so that it displays two days worth of entries. If you wish to see past entries click the Archive link at the bottom of this page, and then select the week for the articles that you want to read. Let me know whether you think I should keep more days entries on this page. I am trying to find a balance that keeps page load times on the Pocket PC low while still displaying a reasonable amount of content. Besides displaying a days worth of entries I can configure this log to display X number of the last entries, regardless of whether they spread across days.

A new question: How do I secure my iPaq in its cradle?

Semper Aptus - News - NextCell Pocket Spider Wireless modem for the Pocket PC:
"What is truly amazing is that the Pocket Spider has all of the installation files and the software application burned on the CF card. Simply insert the card into your Pocket PC and the driver and program are automatically installed -no desktop computer required." Being a Type 1 CF device it can be used in all Windows CE devices except the Casio EM-500. With a PC Card adapter it should also work with notebook computers. To me this looks like the CDPD modem to get. The one downside is that it uses the CF slot, whereas the Novatel Ministrel sled for the Jornada connects via the serial port, keeping the CF slot free.

Pocket PC Thoughts Ack! I wasn't ready to be public yet.

ZDNet: Story: iPaq-ing the Power -- and Some Quirks I find it curious how I have been using Windows CE devices for nearly four years I can recall one hard reset issue that occurred with the very first Handheld PC I owned. Yet, people who write these reviews use the devices for about a week and somehow manage to force hard resets every time -- multiple times even!

BrightHand has posted its review of the monochrome iPaq. Good news is that the dust problems might be fixed. My guess is that if this unit sells well overseas we might see it in the US. If it doesn't, it won't appear. I wonder how many people in the United States will buy the unit from overseas?

Another interesting Blogger tidbit. I can post entries from my Pocket PC, but I can't publish them because the FTP publishing process opens a second browser window to log on. My guess is that if I used Pyra's server to host this site I wouldn't have that problem. But I like hosting this on my on domain.

Another plus for Blogger -- its right-click function to add and publish content works through firewalls. Manila's doesn't.

I have created an AvantGo channel for this log, and it appears that AvantGo is automatically removing the ClearType meta tag. So if you view this page using AvantGo it will not render in ClearType.

Pocket PC Thoughts I have to admit, this log is not an original idea. I have been running a web log, Notes From The Cave, for nearly a year using Manila provided at EditThisPage.com. I had been seeing mention of Blogger and Pyra for a while, so when my friend Jason Dunn created Pocket PC Thoughts using Blogger I decided to check it out. There are two things that I like about Blogger. First is that I can store content on my web server, and Blogger just FTPs it over. The second is that it appears to be much easier to create content for Pocket PCs using Blogger than it is with Manila. Manila is really optimized for creating content that is viewed using Internet Explorer on a desktop computer. So, Blogger is the tool that I am using to maintain the Log portion of PocketPCHow2.com.

If you are reading this on a Pocket PC you will notice that this page (and the entire PocketPCHow2 site) is rendering in ClearType. Are you wondering how I am doing that? Well it is very easy, all you need to is add the following META tag in the HEADER section: <META HTTP-EQUIV="CLEARTYPE">. This tag tells Internet Explorer on the Pocket PC to use ClearType, but other web browsers ignore the instruction.

BrightHand has a monochrome iPaq for review and has posted some teaser pics. If memory services me right, the dark buttons are how the iPaq looked when I saw prototypes in March. I wonder if the darker buttons are to make the device more noticably monochrome? It also looks like the monochrome unit is shipping with a serial cradle.

A new site.. a new blog. Welcome to the PocketPCHow2 Log. Here I will write about the Pocket PC information that I find on the Internet, along with occasional entries about what I am doing with my Pocket PC. Updates to this section will be frequent... hopefully daily!
